Well, there’s your problem. Lissener wasn’t talking about sports, per se. He was calling “sports on HDTV” an “oxymoronic ludicrosity.” And he’s right!

Sports on HDTV aren’t really sports! They’re a 2D construct, a representation, an image. Can you smell the dirt and sweat of the players on HDTV? No! Can you feel the slap of the dodgeball upside your head? No!

Sports are meant to be experienced: smelled, and felt, and tasted. The pale construct represented on HDTV isn’t “sports.” It’s a ludicrosity.

And you’d do well to remember that.

But why HDTV in particular? It’s just as far removed from the authentic experience on the RCA of my youth as it is in the showroom at Paul’s King of Bigscreen.

My chances of seeing Gina Gershon nude in real life are so miniscule that they can’t be measured with 21st century technology. I’ll take a 2D representation as the next best thing. Lacking as it may be, it is of the same order of magnitude better than no nude Gina Gershon at all.
