List of NYTimes Book Review editors

I searched for something I thought should be trivial to pull up, a list of all the editors of the New York Times Book Review and when they served, but I got bupkis.

Anybody with better Google-fu than me? Even a post-WWII list would be helpful. I don’t really care that much about the 19th century.

Sorry, no, but would you settle for 25 years as being at least better than bupkis? :stuck_out_tongue:

Rebecca Pepper Sinkler (1989-1994 I think), Charles (Chip) McGrath (1994-2004), Sam Tanenhaus (2004-2013), and now Pamela Paul, the former children’s book and features editor.

It’s a bisel. I should have said I don’t care much about the 21st century either.

I’m really looking for the 50s and 60s, but I figured a whole list would be easier.

If you mean “The Editor” of the NYT Magazine, and not a list of all the assistant editors, ----

Clifford Smyth, 1913-1922

J. Donald Adams, 1925-1943

Robert Van Gelder, 1943-1946

John Leonard, 1970-1975

Harvey Shapiro, 1975-???

There was no list I found, just some hard searching the NYT.

Still looking for the missing years you need.

Found the missing piece–
Francis Brown,
1949-1971

The New York Times Magazine is a different entity from the Book Review.

It’s also not to be confused with the New York Review of Books.

I just screwed up the posting, not my research.

They were all “The Editor” of the NYT Book Review. :smack:

Thanks, sam. Interesting that the same editor reigned for that entire period. Rather screws up some theories I had about changes in policy. :smack:

I could tell from you listing John Leonard, who was the most visible editor and definitely a Book Review not Magazine guy.

Everyone knows they are totally different - the Book Review doesn’t have puzzles.
