List of superheroes who have stayed dead

Morituri.

Re : Infinite Crisis, Dan Didio (VP at DC) has said death is becoming a much more permanent thing in the DCU.

The old rule at Marvel used to be you could bring anyone back from the dead except Captain Marvel and Uncle Ben.

I haven’t been reading Cap lately either, but I’ve heard that Ed Brubaker, the author that brought back Bucky, was one of the best things to happen to the book in a long time. I still don’t agree with bringing Bucky back, but I guess if the story is good, then why not? I just hate for death in comics to be cheapened (as if it had any more value than a Canadian dollar as it is.)

At least until he is replaced.

Hmm. The last few hundred times I saw that quoted, it was Bucky and Uncle Ben.

Not so much a rule, more a guideline.

I read the hardcover that collected the first six issues of Brubaker’s Cap, and it was very good. And I say that as a huge Brubaker fan (I loved his Sleeper and Catwoman runs), but not the biggest Marvel or Captain America fan. If you’ve never cared for the character before, give his run a try, preferably grabbing the TPB and starting at the beginning.

Haven’t read in a while but,

from the new mutants:

Cypher/Warlock
Illyana/Magik

Is quicksilver still around?

Which I hope is soon, as I don’t like the man, his policies, or his apparent drive to rid the DCU of anything fun.

He came back in the Zero Hour reboot, too. He just wasn’t a superhero. (A news reporter, and possibly Invisible Kid’s lover.)

Starman (I) has stayed dead so far. As have Sandman (I), Atom (I), Johnny Thunder, Doctor Mid-Nite (I), Star Spangled Kid (I)/Skyman (aside from 2 issues of JSA, where the timeline was disrupted), Phantom Lady (I and presumably II), Black Condor (I and presumably II)…Quite a few Golden Age characters who’ve been shown to die have stayed that way. Doctor Midnight and Wildcat (II), too, since golden age legacies have been brought up…

Starman (VI) might count…his post-mortem appearances have been brief, and nothing but conversations with Starman (VII) (his brother) (well, mostly - there’s more time-related goofiness with him, but he still hasn’t been back, alive, since the time he died.)

Blue Beetle (II)'s liable to stay dead - although like Phantom Lady (II), Black Condor (II) and Human Bomb, he hasn’t really been dead long enough to be 100% sure (only a year or so!) - but he’s already been replaced. (As, presumably, will be PL and BC, since there’s going to be versions of them in the new Freedom Fighters series.)

Yep. Powerless, but still around.

Douglock…perhaps… I can’t remember if Douglock was confirmed as actually being Doug Ramsey and Warlock combined or he just thought he was.

I’m sure Magick was brought at some point.

Has his own min-series right now.

Strikeforce: Morituri really needs a TPB.

Ah yes…thanks! I couldn’t remember and I don’t have the comics anymore…I gave them all to my son when he turned 14. Gods know where they are now.

I have to say that I found this comic very interesting…mostly BECAUSE the superhero’s died, and died so randomly (sometimes heroically, some times pointlessly). It had an air of sadness with determination I liked.

(probably sound like an idiot) but whats TPB?

-XT

a trade paperback.

The Crimson Avenger and Wing.

Best death in the history of comics.

Technically, it’s a new person with the appearance of Doug Ramsey. Not quite one or the other.

Kinda. I think the recent Magick is an alternate reality/timeline Magick and not the main continuity edition. Seems like skirting the rules to me, but ymmv.

I must admit, I think Blue Beetle II has to be up there with the best of them, and also Starman I (Ted Knight).

You mean the pre-crisis “El Vengador Rojo” story? Yeah, that was damn good. At the time, I was collecting DC Comics Presents for the Superman team-ups. Rarely was the backup “Whatever happened to…?” feature all that interesting, but that story was a notable exception.

No. This didn’t really happen. They didn’t really give someone the power to “punch reality.” You’re making this up, right? Right?

Not sure if this counts but I seem to recall a JL associate by the name of something like “Tomorrow Woman.” She joined up but it turned out she was a robot infiltrator, except she turned on her Evil Overlord and switched over to the good guys. Or am I imagining this?

How does the OP feel about heroes who’ve been defunct for decades and can be assumed dead?
