I tend to have weird dreams without Melatonin. ![]()
Another suggestion before you go on medication for restless legs - I have a mild case, and I find that vitamin C works for me to relieve the urge to move my legs. I take a daily dose, then an additional pill if my legs are jumping more than usual. Plus, you get all the benefits from daily vitamin C! Win-win!
Interesting! I’ll give that a try. I always see medication as a last resort.
It’s a bonus that vitamin C tables taste like orange juice candy ![]()
I tried melatonin but didn’t last long. Worked really well the first few nights, then dropped off a bit in effectiveness. Then came the came the side effects. Weird tightness starting in my chest, then intensifying through my torso and into my back, as if I’d been speared through or something. Coupled with some nausea, and in a few especially bad cases horrendous vomiting. Took a long time to figure out what was causing all this, but then I realized it seemed to come on the day after I’d take a melatonin, and then it went away completely after I stopped the melatonin.
I also tried doxylamine succinate (unisom), which also gave me some sort of bad effect, though I don’t exactly recall what it was but it was enough to make sure I don’t take that stuff no more.
So, anyway, when I need something, it’s diphenhydramine (benedryl, tylenol PM, etc) that I take. I generally don’t take a full dose (2 pills) but just one or even half a pill. Doesn’t so much knock me out as helps he stay asleep once I get asleep. Still sometimes have to get up to pee, or whatever, but its not as often as when not taking it. Only side effect is sometimes I get mild constipation or diarrhea when starting or stopping taking it after a long time the other way around.
Although melatonin does work well, I do not recommend it, as I have read that it can interfere with serotonin production, which in turn, can cause depression. I alternate between two wonderful supplements: DreamOn, and Sleep Away. They work very well, and do not contain any melatonin.
It should be noted, however, that DreamOn contains a small, yet highly addictive amount of Steven Tyler. Side effects include earworms that cannot be excised w/o heavy doses of ProgRock.
I can’t wait to try the vitamin C trick, Cat Whisperer.
