That seems really, really insensitive on the part of the parents. I mean, during the siege of Leningrad, when people were literally starving, I’ve heard families traded pets…so no one would have to eat their own cat.
ETA: OTOH I’ve known 4H kids who raised livestock, and basically treated them as pets, but had no problem when said animals also provided good eating. So, you know, things raised as livestock vs. things raised as pets.
Well, I thought it was funny, both from the point of view of “don’t 1st Graders have weird ideas of the world/freak out at the damnedest things” and “pkbites can’t catch a break”.
