Little Mosque on the Prairie - Series premiere

Did anyone else catch this tonight? I thought it showed definite promise - they’re pushing the stereotypes just far enough to make things potentially very funny. The acting was better than I was expecting, too.

It wasn’t quite as funny as I’d hoped, but it was the pilot, and I’ve got a feeling that once the characters start developing, the CBC will have a really good show on their hands.

Did anyone else enjoy it? Hate it?

I loved it.

I’m not sure who I like better. Yasir, Amaar, or the Reverend. The bit with Amaar getting arrested was hilarious, particularly when he tries to call the mosque and gets Yasir’s answering machine.

I kinda liked the exchange between Amaar and the terrorist-seeking journalist hick:

Reporter: “Are you form Saudi Arabia?”
Amaar: “No!! I’m from Toronto!”
Reporter: “Toronto? That’s even better!!”

Indeed. That was great.

'Cuz…you know…

Toronto sucks.

googles

Huh. I hadn’t heard of that before. I’m quite intrigued…

Sadly, I don’t get any Canadian TV around here. Used to, though, when I lived in Michigan.

I watched it. Giggled a few times.

I thought the premiere was a little clunky, but it has to introduce a lot of things. It has potential though.

Of course anything with Sitara Hewitt is ok with me.

It wasn’t brilliant but I did laugh a few times. I think if the pace settles down, it’ll be good. They didn’t need to cram a whole week into an episode, I’m thinking. And I’m learning stuff - the funny dispute over the beginning of Ramadan; who knew it was an issue?

Well, ok probably some people did.

I will definitely give this show a chance. It is based in Saskatchewan so I wonder if it has the some of the same writers as “Corner Gas.” It has a lot of potential.

Ah, CBC, you sad old government whore. Now that a rival network has proved that Canadians can actually be funny in Canada, you unbend long enough to try to actually be funny in a comedy for a change, eh? Just moving the setting of a tv show out of Toronto isn’t enough, you know. You might have to pull your heads out of your arses (or off the government tit) long enough to look around and figure out what Canadians actually are like, and like to watch.

I might have some pent-up issues with CBC. Can you tell?

Me, oh lordy. I was once assigned the task of writing a software routine to calculate it. It was the one and only time I eventually had to tell my boss sorry no can do.

No, it doesn’t. Saskatchewan has actually developed (and is continuing to do so)a nice film and television industry. In Regina, there are routinely film productions occurring spread across television series, miniseries, t.v. movies, and movies themselves.

I thought it was brilliant, definately on the weekly rotation.

I walk by the real Novia Cafe every day - I assume they used the store front for the cafe where the one lady works for a bit of local colour, and because “Novia” sounds sort of exotic.

Wonder what other local features will pop up?

I liked it as well. I was very disappointed to see it was on Tuesdays (I have choir that night) but after the premiere they seem to have moved it to Wednesdays.
