So, if DJ, Lefty, Brooks, etc each got paid $100 million (or more) to join LIV, they just get to keep that money AND from now on get to play on the PGA? That i shard to get my head around. If true, those guys made some of the smartest business decisions in sports history!
I golf quite a bit, but have not met a single person who had the least bit of interest in LIV - or “team” golf.
If I were CBS or NBC or ESPN, I’d be pissed and looking for answers.
The deal LIV has with the CW network is not a traditional one, so the network is not paying huge gobs of money to broadcast LIV events. But the traditional broadcasters have their billion (or thereabouts) dollar multi-year deal with the PGA as well.
They are brilliant in retrospect as were the Saudis. I doubt that any of them realized that it would work out even close to this well.
I suspect that the smartest people in the room at PGA Corporate realized that they were going to lose hard with their sanctions and the only solution to keep their monopoly was to join forces.
Next up: Vlad Putin and his wealthy Russian cronies start up their own alternate golf tour, offering big bucks to pro golfers disenchanted with the new PGA/World Tour/LIV monopoly. The golf oligarchs are outraged and institute sanctions on defectors.
But eventually…
Saw a tweet that in the merger agreement, the PGA will control holes 1-8 and 12-18, while the Saudis will do 9-11.
