Live Tribute by a Group Larger than a Quartet

Do you have any tribute songs done live for an artist, that is a song written by the artist, that makes you want to sing along, even if you are on public transportation?
The tribute must be from a diverse or variety amount of musicians or bands.
The artist(s) cannot be performing on stage - though they could be sat there.

The Auld Triangle

Here is an example of what I mean. Musicians playing a Brendan Behan song.

If I can rephrase your question – which I had to read a couple of times to make sure I understood – you are looking for examples of:

  • Live performances of cover/tribute versions of songs
  • At least five musicians performing in the cover/tribute
  • The original artist can’t be directly involved in the performance – the original artist can be present in the audience, but do they have to be present? (that is not clear to me in your question)

Is that correct?

Sorry if it wasn’t clear. Not five musician necessarily, but people from different musical careers and backgrounds showing their appreciation for another artist. Cover would be more clear than tribute.

I think that the “Concert for George” meets your criteria. It was done in 2002, a year after George Harrison died; it features many of his friends and former recording partners – including Paul and Ringo, as well as George’s son Dhani – doing covers of his songs. It is a truly heartfelt concert, and the cast of musicians is wonderful.

Prince was Prince at his best in that performance.

You may be thinking of Prince’s performance of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” during his induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; Prince was not part of the Concert for George band.
