Liz Truss tries to lead the UK {and resigns as of 2022-10-20}

But he’s also damn good at his job, so no, can’t have that.

I’d propose " … tried to lead …"

But an excellent idea overall, no matter how it’s phrased.

Dunno - what trouble do they suggest for people proposing them in the US?

The issue here was that Truss and Kwarteng put forward a budget that involved cutting taxes and increasing borrowing, on the thesis that cutting taxes would lead to growth and more than pay for itself. But they didn’t provide any workings to show why this would be the case, and in fact turned down the opportunity to have an independent body (the Office of Budget Responsibility) produce a forecast based on the budget. Instead, they stuck with “trust us, this is a great plan, no we can’t show you the details”.

Turned out the markets didn’t trust them, interest rates rocketed and the pound crashed. (Note that they weren’t just proposing these cuts, they announced them while in power).

Apologies if this has been addressed earlier, but can someone put Braverman in context for me?

Of it seems first generation Indian immigrant descent and hard line on anti immigration of non-whites.

Close door behind?

Otherwise known in this country as “Pull the ladder up, I’m all right, Jack”

But it looks a bit ungracious for a born-and-bred white person to make a point of saying so; and it’s not unusual for people in her position to think “My family did it the legal way, why shouldn’t everyone else”- ignoring of course the successive increases in restrictions on legal routes to immigration.

As far as I’m aware it isn’t just restrictions, there is no legal way for anyone to come in that way anymore. Which was why there were so many of the boat people now. Then they’d complain about how many boat people there were.

And the Rwanda thing wasn’t deportation of failed asylum seekers, it was deporting people who were applying, and if they succeeded they didn’t get to stay in the UK., they got to stay in Rwanda.

The previous home secretary, Priti Patel, being exactly the same.

Well, it’s actually a very hard sell on Sunak being a moderate, he is only slightly less insane than Truss and co. He’s one of the original Brexit lot, which Truss was not (though she probably overegged things to try and make up for things).

In this video, she apparently puts herself in context:

This article in an Indian newspaper quotes her as identifying Indians as the group most likely to overstay visas: When Suella Braverman said 'proud of British empire; not going to apologise for its history' - India Today

So, I would imagine she would be very unpopular among a lot of people of Indian descent, especially those with close ties to relatives in India.

Yeah, hence the quotes. But he did spend most of his leadership bid* explaining that Truss’s plans would lead to the pound crashing and interest rates rising, so on the very narrow criteria of fiscal policy he is in line with mainstream thinking and seen as such by the markets.**

*Until he panicked and starting announcing mad ideas like he’d take 4p of income tax, which is a fairly important data point here.

**Is it great that because of Truss we are now allowing the markets a loud voice in who gets to be PM? It is not, no. But further fucking things up would be inexcusable, so…

Wow. Kinda reminds me of a polite British version of that character on early Boondocks.

Yeah, I understood the quotes, but they’re not in the same league, the battle of the last leaders was about skin colour and always would be. They were both pretty much on the same level of extreme, just Truss felt need to make a few steps more to guarantee success over another mad one of the Brexit true believers. But still a Brexit true believer little different from Johnson, and setting the standard of extremism the party’s spell was under.

So basically GOP economics from Reagan forward, which has been happily swallowed by huge sectors of the electorate for decades. Good on the UK for seeing it for what it is (for now at least).

Liz, we hardly knew ye! Here’s a video compiling some of her “best” moments (the pork markets one is still my favorite):

The sadly ironic thing about the Tories’ fiscal irresponsibility is that they probably could’ve gotten away with it if the U.K. was still a part of the E.U., which would’ve provided some measure of a backstop. But now that the U.K. is all alone in the world of finance, it’s just another middle-tier country that’ll sink or swim on its own merits.

The U.S. gets away with it because the U.S. dollar is the world’s primary reserve currency. We’re in for a rude shock if that ever becomes not true.

In America, that’s called 4 Scaramuccis

The big difference isn’t the perspicacity of the British people, it’s that Reaganomics plays out very differently when you don’t have the world’s reserve currency.

Ninja’d

Fair point.

He’d probably do a better job than the current crop of possibles.

“How many new starter homes have you built?”
“Well, I don’t have a number…”
“The number is easy to remember. It’s zero. You’ve built none.”

I need to watch more British news.

In the previous “X tries to lead the UK” thread I vented a little spleen about Tory MPs infatuation with Boris. Given that some of them are now indeed clling for him to return, I will save myself some time and simply self-quote:
