Just been announced that candidates need 100 nominations from Tory MPs to enter the contest.
Final round last time was
Sunak 137
Truss 113
Mordaunt 105
So where do the 113 Truss backers go? Ideally into a cave to contemplate their failure, but more likely to coalesce around one of Boris, Braverman or Badenoch.
Sunak and Mordaunt may go up against each other but may try to arrange a joint ticket kind of deal if they can agree on who gets to be top dog.
In general, there is an enormous amount of horse trading about to kick off, which will be incredibly edifying for everyone.
Strikes me that this latest round of Who Wants to be a Prime Minister is a bit like a reverse Catch-22 situation for any wannabe candidates. To prove you are sane enough to take the job you can’t possibly put yourself up for nomination, as anybody who does that at the moment is clearly insane.
There is something like a cult of personality happening, but instead of revolving around an infallible individual (like Trump), it’s centered on a fantasy of the Spirit of Britannia.
Just want to clear up a common misunderstanding. A “Scaramucci” is an American unit of political time and is not used in Europe. The term “Truss” is metric, and is preferred in most of the world outside the US. It is precisely defined as the time required to open up pork markets in Beijing, equal to 4.5 days. Thus there are approximately 2.44 Truss to a Scaramucci (or “Mooch”). The term “Truss” in common use is technically a dekaTruss in the SI system of weights and measures, defined as 10 Truss.
