The playwright, William Norfolk, used the fact that Lizzie was close friends with itinerant actors, and fantasizes a story where the actors stop by the Borden household on a social visit. They can’t help but ask questions, leading to a spontaneous re-enactment of the trial, guided by Lizzie and her sister.
