Lo-Salt killed my Grandma

In http://www.straightdope.com/columns/991217.html Cecil yacks on about the dangers of KCl poisoning.
I would like to point out two things:

  1. For the vast majority of people KCl is entirely safe. As Cecil says, only people certain medical conditions should need to worry (and by and large they know about this already).
  2. Jack Kovork…Kavouky…Kavorki…Dr Death actually injects (injected?) his patients/victims/whatever with KCL. This will kill just about anyone without leaving a trace (except for the needle mark). This method of disposal is pretty popular in low grade crime/spy books.

I once lost my corkscrew and had to live on food and water for several days

Any substance is toxic if taken in large enough doses. Plain ol H2O will kill you if you were able to ingest and retain enough, it kills by lowereing the % of minerals (salt) in the bodily fluids. Injecting stuff just makes it work faster since it is more concentrated in the blood stream. Inject Distilled water into the blood stream and the salt level plummits. I thought it would be interesting to compare the toxic level of NaCl to that of KCl. I found this cause of death for a 3 month infant;" nine grams of salt during a 24-hour period or slightly longer as a result of being fed food prepared for adults." Then I found this for KCl;
*TOXICITY:
typ. dose mode specie amount LDLo orl inf 938 mg/kg/2D
TDLo unk hmn 238 mg/kg/D
*SYMPTOMS:If no pre-existing kidney damage, it is rapidly excreted.Poisoning disturbs the rhythm of heart.
And NaCl;
*TOXICITY:
dos mode specie amount unit other
TDLo orl hmn 12357mg/kg/23D-C TFX:BPR
Found here http://www.scorecard.org/chemical-profiles/
I got no idea what the charts are saying!!! Can anyone interpret it for me?
I guess hmn is us, inf is baby hmns and oral makes sense but what is TDLo and unk? ( is that how Unka Cece would take it? Say it aint so) But for the average adult Hmn in average health what is a comparison of the toxicity of NaCl and KCl?
Course we all know a sufficient quantity of KNO3 would lead to the extinction of all hmn kind.

Having been a dialysis nurse for a number of years, I strongly agree that children and anyone with heart or kidney problems should avoid salt substitutes. Our patients are told not to use it.

There was also a situation in Indiana, I believe, recently, where a nurse was convicted of murdering patients with Potassium Chloride.

TDLo (Toxic Dose Low) is the lowest dose of a toxin that has resulted in ill effects for a human. I would guess “TDLo orl hmn” is the lowest dose taken orally in a human that harmed someone, but take my guesses with a grain of salt (or salt substitute if you are feeling lucky!).

Go Cecil! I’m looking forward to a flood of newly informed spouses seasoning their mates’ morning eggs with largish quantities of salt substitute.

Whatever works…

Didn’t the military use KCl to supress sexual urges in troops during WW2? I remember hearing something like this back in high school.

You’re thinking of KNaO[sub]3[/sub], Potassium nitrate, aka Saltpeter (Saltpetre in the UK) aka “soft Peter” to the terminally clueless, best known as the major ingredient in black gunpowder.

The notion that it is an antiaphrodisiac is an Urban Myth. However, it is a well-established one, so I’d want to look for actual documentary evidence one way or other as to whether or not it was actually done at any given time. Absent documents, though, I’m inclined to vote “no”. I mean, geez, if it, like, makes them not want girls, y’know, maybe it’d make them, like, y’know, fairies or sum’pin. And we sure don’t want our brave boys to be fairies! Not in the good ol’ U S of A!

I understand it was potentionally used to lower there total sex drive, not just lust for girls. when you are in a fox hole for days at a time with other soldgers it is probally hard to pick up girls and some might think of an alternitive. If salt peter works, then this wouldn’t be a problem or at least less so.

By the way, that’s KNO3, not KNaO3. I have no idea where the Na came from, unless it was a combination of the high fever I was running and the fact that, the day before, due to an odd series of events, I had hot dogs at every meal.
