Actually, in an effort to pin down the residence of a certain family in the 1920’s, in Chicago, we need to know the location(s) of Kellogg Switchboard and Supply Co. One of the family members was known to be able to walk to work, and we know she lived IN Chicago, and she worked at Kellogg.
I knew there was a “Cicero Avenue plant” … as a matter of fact, I believe that that’s the original plant, as the company was founded ‘near Chicago’. But there is a picture from the Daily News of 1909 in the Library of Congress archives which shows a Kellogg Switchboard facility that, to my mind, MUST be on the near west side of Chicago. I think that’s the one I’m looking for. On the other hand, I may be (could well be) wrong.
But thanks a lot. Where did you find that reference??
Thanks, pjd. Duh!! I guess I need to pay closer attention. In the meantime, I had actually found the quoted reference by doing a search on the address - after I had filtered through MANY references to the Hotels that have existed on that site.
Thanks for your help … I have found the address I was looking for. I found a seller on eBay who had a manual from one of the devices manufactured by Kellogg and on the front of the manual is the ADDRESS!! As I suspected, the plant was on the near-west side of Chicago at 1045 W. Adams Street. If I learned anything here, it is that I must be more patient and thorough. Thanks again.
I believe there were city directories of Chicago printed in the l920s. If so, they may be availble in larger genealogy libraries or in the Chicago area. Microfilm of the 1920 and 1930 US census would also be there, the 1920 is indexed.
Thanks, pjd. I kept getting errors when I tried to reply and then I had to take off for campus - this is the first time I’ve been able to get back to this thread.
One hint for your next question, llohman - if you make your thread title more descriptive, you may get more views and responses. Oh, and welcome to the boards, both of you.
