Locked mswas thread?

Hello,

I am wondering why you locked that thread about him getting suspended. I thought this forum was where we gave our 2 cents on suspensions.

I, for one, think the suspension was a little harsh. While the 2nd half of the post was a little over the top, I can’t really blame him for the amount of piling that he was enduring. The first half of the post, IMO, was just an opinion that he holds. Was there other stupidity that I missed? I know that him and few other posters got into a rather heated debate on the topic of Hamas, and that thread has become something of a train wreck, it seems to me he was partly suspended due to his beliefs, as well as the fact that a lot of posters don’t seem to care much for him. These posters are more then willing to pile on in pit threads.

Unless there were other warnings that I am not aware of (and this could be quite true), it seems to me that this suspension was unnecessary. The only other time I have seen a suspension, or banning, it had quite a few warnings attached to it.

However, if I am wrong, and we aren’t allowed to give our opinions on mod actions, then I apologize, or if this isn’t the correct forum.

With the nova flash of meltdown he was doing he deserved a suspension to cool down (which has been a tool they’ve used before to keep posters from burning out)

but with the Holocaust ‘joke’ he should have been banned I think the suspension was too easy if anything.

Tuba seemed to make it clear why s/he locked it - people were still piling on mswas in that thread, and he can’t defend himself.

I guess if you disagree you have to e-mail a mod?

One person is not a pileon. I agree attacking a person who is unable to defend himself is poor form, but locking the thread after only one such post was just plain silly. A warning and a plea for civility would have been sufficient.

Exactly.

And shutting threads in this arbitrary fashion is a pointless exercise anyway. The odds are that someone will open another thread on the subject, as indeed happened here.

“A plea for civility” is too often overlooked, even here. It was gonna be close it now or close it later and I didn’t particularly care to see more on the subject.

Suspension gives someone who has transgressed a chance to reconsider and cool down. Slapping them when they are unable to post to the board in defense of themselves is unfair. Not that I think what he did was defensible, but further wrongs don’t make anything right. Enough already.

TubaDiva

You didn’t care to see more on the subject?

Is this now a legitimate reason for mods and admins to close threads?

Sheesh!

You’re for more incivility?

Isn’t that why we suspended mswas in the first place?

Double sheesh.

It’s not your Cecil-given right to kick someone when they’re defenseless.

TubaDiva

Well, we had already had…

…and…

…and…

…and…

…and…

…and…

…before fluiddruid was able to lock it. My guess is that Tubadiva, having moderated this board for about 7 years now, knew that would’ve continued for as long as the thread was open. How exactly does that fit the mission of the board?

I wasn’t defending, nor attacking, Tuba’s action - I read the OP as a real question, and not a rhetorical one. So I answered it.

That was a pit thread, and every single one of those comments was made in response to his idiocy before he was suspended.

I had no wish to kick him. Just the opportunity to comment on the suspension, which, in my view, given the appalling nature of his comment on the Holocaust, should have been an outright ban.

We’ve been permitted to debate such suspensions in the past, with warnings given if the thread descends to an attack on the suspendee.

And you didn’t address one of my points. What is achieved by closing one thread, knowing, as you surely must have done, that somebody would open another? Or are you going to close this one too, just in case?

Mswas was suspended for incivility?

Now that really is a sheesh!

Actually, I am going to close this thread. The place for complaints about moderator actions is the Pit.
