So my son told me today about lonelygirl15…an apparent internet hoax of sorts and was surprised, nay, shocked, that we weren’t discussing it here. He made me search, just to prove to him that it hadn’t been discussed on the Dope, and I can’t find anything. Now even the New York Times is talking about this, so I wondered if anyone here has been following the tale of Bree. Here’s the YouYube location…in the list of videos, go to the second from the bottom on page three for the debut.
Just interested in any comments about the raging controversy about this apparent experiment in story telling. When I watched the first one, it seemed to me that it was not genuine, but then I knew why I was watching it. I can’t see how people could be fooled.
yea this is kittenblue’s son and for me it wasent so much entertainment but a morbid facination of wtf this girl was tryin to portray. the proveing science wrong videos were the worst out of them all.
Read some of the commnets on the videos you’ll see most people agree with you in how stupid this girl was and i dont understand how anyone couldnt see the fakeness about these videos but you watch a tv show knowing its not real ie. fake but you still watch cause you want to know what will happen next or wount happen.
and as far as the entertinment value of this maybe your too old to laugh at some of the stupid childish jokes but then again who knows.
P.s. sorry mom i took over the computer =P ill do it again too.
Wait, wait, wait… I’m missing something. Can anyone link me to the story?
I see an apparent video blog that apparently is a “fake” video blog. I think. But what’s “fake” about it (other than the fact that the editing concepts seem way too advanced for an average 16 year old)?
So, what’s the punchline? Is she a character on an upcoming TV show or something? Is she going to be the new Old Navy spokesmodel?
Just read the Wikipedia article, I’d seen a few lg15s the past two weeks but I didn’t know about the Crowley connection. That was surprising, given that it stated very clearly in one lg15 that “Bree” is LDS.
Now- I am also glad that the actress is 19, because… roawwwrrrr!
I’ve been a part of the youtube community for a while so I’ve seen some of the videos. The appeal of Lonelygirl was that she was a hot girl who claimed to be home schooled and not have many friends. I’m not sure why straight females would be interested in watching her, maybe they liked the drama. I was disappointed when she was revealed to be a fake because it lends credence to the idea that all cute girls on the internet are fakes. I posted a video in response to her “coming out.”
I confess, for my sins, that I’ve been following the lonelygirl saga from her (their) first video. It was clear from the start that this wasn’t the effort of a couple of teenagers. The lighting was way too professional. But it was fun to watch for the acting (she’s pretty convincing), the sinister plot developments (suggested at rather than initiated) and the way the YouTube community used their detective skills to explode the whole thing.
They’ve introduced another twist now with the cassiewatching video, with the tagline ‘bree tells lies’: a breathless ‘I was here’ introduces the short vid, which is filmed in the location Bree and Daniel went swimming and suggests a previous murderous outing by Daniel.
Yeah… I’m sure a lot of us sidestepped *that *bullet!
She’s kinda got a Mariel Hemingway thing going on with those eyebrows and that flitty 16 year-old can’t-sit-still-while-I-talk thing annoyed the ever-loving strawberry cake out of me, but still… damn…
I just watched them all, and I liked it. I thought she and Daniel were likable characters.
Mostly I just think it’s cool to see people experimenting with different methods of storytelling.
That’s a “feature”, not a “bug”. I presume that RumMunkey made a typo in his link (or was directed to that URL by someone else who made the typo), but Wikipedia is smart enough to realize that a “Muriel_Hemingway” is intended to be “Mariel_Hemingway”. If you follow RumMunkey’s link, it clearly says that it’s “Redirected from Muriel Hemingway”. The page itself contains no misspellings of Ms. Hemingway’s name, so I’d say that the folks who made the page are just trying to be helpful by accounting for possible errors made by those searching.
I’m surprised that no one’s mentioned it yet, so I will – she was on Jay Leno last night. It was the first I’d heard or seen of this, and I still wondered what the fuss was about. They didn’t say a word about the Crowley stuff. They showed one of her videos (the first?) , then she came out.
Pepper Mill knew about this – I’m way behin the curve.
I’m not sure if straight females were ever the target audience. Rather, I think she was a lot like Natalie Portman in “Garden State”: a geeky male’s dream come true! That is, she was a beautiful girl with all of the neuroses and problems and off-beat interests a male high school nerd could relate to.
That first video should have been a clue. lonelygirl15 starts out by saying that she’s 16. :dubious:
And while there may be 16-year-olds or even 15-year-olds in Hollywood who look like that, the teens of that age I see in the malls do not look anywhere near as old as she does. You can see a huge difference in facial development over those few years. She was the media image of a teen: an adult actress playing younger so that the school hours rules can be avoided.
