Longest prison sentence

I just read about a guy who faces 10,000 years in prison, what is the longest sentence ever imposed on someone?

Huh. For a while I thought it was Han Solo, being cast into the pit of Sarlaac, where he would find a new definition of pain and suffering as he was slowly digested over a thousand years, but I guess this is longer than that.

According to the 1996 Guiness Book of World Records, Chamoy Thipyaso and her associates were each sentenced in Bangkok, Thailand, to 141,078 years for swindling.

Guiness also notes that John Wayne Gacy, Jr. was sentenced to 21 consecutive life sentences and 12 death sentences.

–sublight.

If they ever invented eternal youth, would “life” sentences be appealed on the grounds that no one was really expected to serve more than 80 or 90 years in prison? Would eternity in prison be ruled cruel and unusual punishment? How about vastly long but finite sentences?

I remember a Guiness edition from the 80’s that mentioned a Spanish post-man who had a six figure sentence for not delivering hundreds of thousands of letters.

Further to which:

‘A sentence of 384,912 years was demanded at the prosecution of Gabriel March Grandos, 22, at Palma de Mallorca, Spain, on 11 March 1972 for failing to deliver 42,768 letters.’

Guinness Book Of Records 1991.
This is exactly 9 years per letter.

Are they serious about this. I can see the sentences for Gacy, but those other cases seem to be someone trying to be cute. It would surely come under the heading of cruel and unusual punishment
