Look at this bad boy! (A380)

Dwarfing the 747-400 and giving a whole new definition to the expression “Flight A380 heavy, on final approach”, it’s a bad mofo.

Yeah, it’s pretty impressive. I would have liked to see a side-by-side with a 777, to see how much bigger it is.

There’s a comparison with the 747 at the bottom of this page.

Bigger by far:

Boeing 777
Capacity: 250-440
Length: 63.73 m
Wingspan: 60.9 m

Airbus A380
Capacity: 555-880
Length: 73 m
Wingspan: 79.8 m

Wikipedia comparator.

This just shows how amazing the 747 was. 40 years later, and they can only slightly improve on it.

Oops, I guess a 747 is the next biggest. I always thought the 777 was bigger than 747.

Wow. 880 people. Someday we’ll hear the words ‘A380’ and ‘there were no survivors’ in the same sentence. Kinda freaky.

Not surprised - first time I stood next to a 777 I was blown away, and thought it was larger than a 747.

That was my first thought as well. The first time one of these craters is going to be more painful than usual, just on sheer numbers.

That basket carries too many eggs at a time for my liking.

But yeah…lower it, chrome out the intakes, undercarriage light kit, definitely a hit with the ladies.

Are there any pictures of the interior, or are they empty awaiting custom orders from airlines?

We’re gonna need a bigger runway.

Yeah, I’ve actually been on both types, and the 777 seemed bigger inside, even though it did have fewer seats across.

You ain’t seen nuthin 'til you’ve seen an Antonov 225. This thing was in my area a few years ago, it’s too big for words and the pictures don’t do it justice.

Here’s the thread I started when I first saw it.

Heh. Photo 64 in that slideshow just seems maliciously manufactured…which of course, it was. But oh so badly. I mean, you can’t even read the “Boeing” flag as the A380 is flying past. Comically cheesy journalism.

Meh. They had something 33% longer years ago.

(Not quite a like-for-like comparison, but it could’ve kicked sand in the A380’s face and yelled “Who’s your daddy?” any time.)

By my earlier metrics, for comparison, the Antonov 225 dimensions are:

Capacity: n/a (though probably thousands if you stack 'em)
Length: 88.4 m
Wingspan: 84 m

But even more impressive than that is that the Antonov 22 is known as “The Cock”.

(We reference here a well-known story involving Winston Churchill and the words “Medium Size”)

I’m fairly sure I’ve seen a picture of a model one of these - leastways it was a six-engined twin-finned Anti and you don’t see many of those around. Even the model was a big bastard.

Don’t think I’ll be flying on one of them for a few years, until we find out if the cabin pressure/potential failure “issue” is an issue or not. I told my secretary not to schedule me on any until about…2010.
