Recently I’ve developed a hobby of sending out Christmas and birthday cards to my friends and family around the world, and I bought this personalized pencil case from Etsy to help store my pens, stamps, and return address labels:
Today I decided to photograph my personal meteorite strewnfield.
All of these are pieces of the meteorite NWA 869, which entered Earth’s atmosphere around 4,000-5,000 years ago and shattered into thousands of fragments that fell across tens of square miles of the Northern Sahara desert. They lay where they landed through the rise and fall of civilizations until in the beginning of the 21st century people finally decided that they were interesting and valuable enough to pick up. (The largest piece in the photos is 186 grams or 6 1/2 ounces.)
(The sand in the photo has its own, slightly less epic story. I dug some of the dense red clay that famously covers the US South from my yard out of curiousity and washed it until all of the fine particles were gone, showing it to consist of around 5% to 10% angular quartz sand. Enough to make a new Sahara if the erosional conditions were right.)
Back when the mask thing came down my sister ordered me a mask with dachshunds on it. But I guess she planned to give it to me at Christmas, because, when she died, we didn’t know about it. My BIL found it when going through her presents stash.
MOAR FOXESES!
This is a bit worn, but I’ve had this sticker on my phone case almost since I got it earlier this year.
And this just came in today. Originally, I was going to put it on my water bottle, but I realized it would come off in the dishwasher, so I put it on my computer instead.
Here’s my collection of a book from every country (plus some territories, not entirely separate sovereign nations, and similar). It is the cover photo for a Goodreads group I no longer actively participate in.
Are they in their native languages, or in a language you can read?
Also, which book is the one you have from The Bahamas? That’s the only foreign country I’ve been to.
The majority are in English (written in English or translated), while some are in French or Spanish.
Bahamas: Gertrude “Cleo” Lythgoe: The Bahama Queen: The Autobiography of Gertrude “Cleo” Lythgoe: Prohibition’s Daring Beauty: Including With the Whiskey Smugglers by H. De Winton Wigley
This is fantastic! I don’t mean to pry, but you wouldn’t happen to have a list of these? (Or a higher res pic?) Anyway, really cool idea!
Sure! I’d be happy to post it next time I’m at a computer.
I was able to poke around by phone. Here’s a thread that includes my lists (there may be a book or two missing but the great majority are there). There’s also discussion with group members.
That Goodreads group is a great source of ideas, as is Ann Morgan’s The World Between Two Covers. People used to suggest books in comments on her blog; I’m not sure if they still do.
Brilliant—thank you!!
I realized I was running low on address labels, and the ones I bought before from Etsy:
…were out of stock, so I got some new ones from a different company on Etsy:
I got a new, larger fox sticker for my phone case to replace the one that was faded:
…a personalized tote bag from the makers of the pencil case, which I’m using as a shower bag…
And a 20-color LED three-tailed fox nightlight that uses a remote control.
I love this thread!
This is a cool thread!
@ekedolphin , you’re probably aware that Audi made a car called the Fox in the 1970s. On eBay someone is selling this ad that looks interesting. But the price is near $300 which is ridiculous!
