Saw this for the first time on TCM last night, and man, I was floored at the intensity of his character.
That rapid-fire dialogue and that sudden violence!
Admittedly, I haven’t seen all his films, but those I have seen pale in comparison with that one.
Unless I’m mistaken, I don’t think he could play the trumpet, but he sure made me believe he could (take that with a grain, okay?). I saw the close-up of his fingerings, and from what I could see and remember from my friends’ playing, they looked pretty much right.
I just have to say, I was right in there with all the actors, the anger had me scared at what he might do, and when his friend left on that train, I could “feel” the sadness.
Great movie and glad I got to see it.
