Look up!

Is there an alternative to a sheetrocked painted ceiling in a kitchen? I think it’s common because the smoke from cooking causes the ceiling to be painted more often than other rooms, but I have a high efficency exhaust system that overcomes that. That said, what can go up there?

I guess its depend on the decorating style of the kitchen. Tongue in groove wood is a gorgeous alternative if you have a country feel in your home. Tin ceilings are great and highly decorative. I’ve also seen ceilings wallpapered with anaglypta (a very textured wallpaper). There are lots of alternatives. Pick up some decorating magazines and start looking. For me, the search is half the fun.

You could always staple plastic flowers to the ceiling.
