We’re veering off on to a new topic (as often happens) but I doubt that humanity will either be extinct or evolved into a new species in a thousand years. A thousand years is a long time but it’s not that long. There are plenty of institutions around today that are older than a thousand years and there’s no reason to assume that at least some of our current institutions won’t survive a thousand years from now.
I don’t share the pessimism so many people seem to feel about humanity’s survival - human beings have endured for tens of thousands of years and have gotten better at surviving as they go along. At worse, even if we’ve hit our peak, I think the slide back down will be gradual and there will be a bottom point.
As for the idea that we’re approaching some kind of Vernor Vinge like breakthru, I think instead we’re going to see progress slowed down by cultural friction. People are going to get to the point where they don’t want to change even if change for the better is available - and I think this will become more noticable as human lifespans increase and you have less of a generational turnover.
