This is probably from a few decades back. By listening the the last albums from performers whose lives were cut tragically short, this guy is able to either go back in time or enter another universe to prevent the death from taking place and allowing the next album to come out. I think he saves the life of Jimi Hendrix, Dennis Wilson and a few others. Has anyone heard of this book?

That sounds like the book. I guess I misremembered when I had last read it.
Sounded intriguing enough to me that I nabbed the Kindle edition. Current price is 4.99 US, which puts it into a range where I’m willing to take a chance. 
Apparently I was right about when I had read it. While the current edition is from 2019, it was first published in 1993. Also, Shiner created one the more powerful characters in George R.R. Martin’s “Wild Cards” series- Fortunato.
