Looking for a new camera

I’ve got a Canon 7D, not the Mk2, with a zoom that would be called a “kit lens”. IOW, not the top of the line lens.

Im interested in the newer Canon mirrorless cameras. I’d like to stick with Canon because I’ve got two Canon flash units that can be controlled via the cameras pop up flash.

I do general photographic stuff including informal family group stuff as well as Santa photos for a local non profit. So no really high end stuff.

I do have a Sony NEX3 that’s a mirrorless camera and use it for times when I just want to have a camera along.

Tell me about your experiences.

I would ask is there anything you want your camera to do that your current camera does not?

If your current camera fulfills your needs, then just about any of the DSLRs or mirrorless cameras will do that just fine.

Then the options are all about how they feel in your hand or familiarity of operation.

I’ll echo Hermitian: the 7D is a nice camera; what is it about that camera that you find lacking or limiting? Or is it primarily a drive to want to go mirrorless?

One thing I hate about the 7D is the fact it only takes CF cards. Small matter I know, but I’m easily annoyed. My PC has a slot for SD cards. Yes I can, and do use a CF to SD adaptor, but for some reason it slows the write process enough that it limits video duration to about 20 seconds. Yes, I can use a card reader, but see the part above where I mentioned I’m easily annoyed.

I suppose it’s a dumb reason for wanting a new camera but there it is.

Heh. I’ve just added a new camera to my collection. OK, it’s not ‘new’; it’s used. Well, ‘vintage’ might be a better word. It was made sometime between 1962 and 1970.

Sorry I can’t help, but I had the camera in my hand and then I saw the thread title. :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t own any mirrorless cameras, and as an old fogey I’m not sure I’d like them at the current stage of technology, but: given that you don’t have a huge investment in Canon lenses, I’d at least consider Sony. They seem to have a lot to like.

The Sonys look good and have good reviews, but they won’t work with my Canon flash units. I’m assuming that there are Sony units that would do the same thing, but that’s an additional $5-600 bucks.

Different systems, but I recently switched from DSLR to mirrorless (Nikon D5100 to Fuji X-T20). I don’t regret it for a second - the whole system is smaller and lighter, but the main benefit is the EVF. I expected to have to “put up with” not having an optical viewfinder, but actually I now much prefer the electronic one. Seeing what the actual exposure will turn out like on the image makes a huge difference to my photography.

To clarify, if the scene is under exposed, are you saying it looks dark in the viewfinder? On my Canon it will looks dark in the review screen, but if I’m using live view I don’t think it does. I’ll have to check that out.

Yes, it looks exactly the same in the EVF as the captured image will look.
