As the title says, I’m in need of a small, simple “Blog” application. I already have the website, so I’d rather not use an offsite source like LiveJournal or Blogger.
I’m looking for similar functionality, though. Basically, open an app on the PC, type in the update, press “send” and the page on the site is updated. Right now I’m doing it by manual change of the HTML page, then FTP-ing it to the site.
I’ve looked around, and most apps I find are either designed to ‘manage’ an existing blog, add fluff (emoticons and such, which I don’t need- pure text would be fine for now) or, the one that seemed closest to what I wanted, was labelled “adware” and had some nasty reviews.
I realize I’ll probably need CGI or SQL or somesuch- my site supports it, but the app is going to need to be more or less plug-and-play.
I suppose the question is, does such a thing exist? If not, what are some other options?
Greymatter is a CGI program you install on your site - it runs much like Blogger does - there’s a webpage you have to use to write your entry - but it is entirely on your server.
I got lost in it though - too many templates to mess with. If it looks a bit complicated there is an option for Blogger that FTPs the files to your site instead of keeping them on its server (blogspot.com or something).
Or you could write your own. I managed to develop a very simple one, only to find my server doesn’t support ASP.
Try iBlog (first google result you get) – it’s possible it’s Mac only, but you didn’t say you didn’t have a Mac.
Alternatively, if you don’t mind the learning curve you can try something like PostNuke. It’s entirely server-side resident, but you have the advantage of being able to update content from anywhere in the world.
Doc, I started a blog topic in IMHO & if you get the new Beta toolbar from http://www.google.com/ it has a blog link on the toolbar, would that be useful?
ryoushi- That GreyMatter looks, at first glance, like what I’m after. Technically it’ll be on a commercial site, so I’d have to pay a license for “MovableType”.
A quick look at the Google bar didn’t reveal what I’m looking for, though I’m still looking through PostNuke’s stuff.
I can barely muddle my way through the very basics of HTML, and I know nothing at all about JAVA, PHP or mySQL.
Thus, I need the “plug and play”. I can tell it where to FTP through, and with help I’m sure I can get the server to cooperate with a database, etc, but I really just need a drop-in-and-go (more or less) application.
