Another thread on a similar topic has gotten me thinking about the old days. When I took freshman Spanish in high school more than half a century ago (In those days we learned Castilian Spanish) I was amazed to learn that there were words in Spanish that had no exact equivalent in English since I had assumed that there would be a one-to-one correspondence in words between the two languages. This was brought home to me in an early lesson when one of the words in the vocabulary we had to learn (for some inexplicable reason) was a word that meant “a ticket for an opening night performance at a theater.” So instead of saying, as you would in English, “I have two tickets for the opening night of Neil Simon’s new play.”, you would say " I have two xxx for Neil Simon’s new play." I have three questions. Was that word used in Latin American Spanish as well as Spanish Spanish? What was the word? Is it still in use?
A single word? I would have said “entrada de estreno”, the opening night is the estreno.
“Ensayo general” is the final, full-dress and makeup and no interruptions, try before the opening night of a performance. “Preestreno” is an opening night that’s by invitation only (as opposed to the general public).
