There was recent thread that highlight the Geico ringtone; and how you could get it for free from the Geico website. I downloaded it because I personally find it hilarious. I know there’s a ton of sites that proclaim free ring tones; but I’m interested in sites where you can actually get a free ring tone; advertising ones like the Geico ring-a-ding are ok.
Phonezoo I think is legit. The tones are limited to whatever people upload though, so quality can be kinda low and you can’t edit them to any of your own preferences.
Someone will be along no doubt with a site that’s a hundred times better.
You can make ringtones for your iPhone quite easily using iTunes. They can be made from any non-protected song in your library. This requires only very basic computer skills and you don’t need to jailbreak your phone.
-
Find the song in your iTunes library. Right click on the song you are going to make into a ringer and select “Get Info”.
-
Go to the “Options” tab and go down to the “Start Time” and “Stop Time” check boxes. Check both boxes and input the time you want your ringer to start/stop. The ringer has to be 30 seconds or less. Click “OK” when you’re done.
-
Right click on your newly “clipped” song and select “Convert Selection to AAC”. The song will be re-encoded using the start and stop times determined (If your menu item does not read “Convert Selection to AAC” and reads “Convert Slection to MP3” (or some other format) please go to iTunes -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Importing and change the “Import Using” drop down menu to “AAC Encoder”).
-
After the song is done encoding (it should take less than 10 seconds) navigate to your iTunes Music folder, locate your song, and drag it to your desktop. After the song is on your desktop go back to iTunes and delete the clipped version from your iTunes library (It won’t delete it from your desktop, it will only remove it from iTunes).
-
Go back the song on your desktop and right click on your song and chose “Properties”. Go to the name and extension section and change the extension from .m4a to .m4r (or you can just change the extension right from your desktop).
-
After the extension is changed simply double click on the file to add it to your iTunes library under the ringtones section. Sync your phone with iTunes and you’re done!
Note: Remember to go back into iTunes and uncheck your custom start and stop times for the original version of your song.
Yep, I’ve done this with some of my MP3s, but sometimes it’s not a song that reminds me of who a person is. As an example, my older daughter called me out for having a ringtone for my younger daughter (“I am a vampire” because I tease her about staying up all night and sleeping during the day). I couldn’t come up with one for my older daughter. The more she fussed about my not having a ring tone for her; I couldn’t find one that I thought fit her personality. Then I stumbled across the Geico ring tone; which ordinarily would drive me nuts. But suddenly I was listening to it and my wife and I were laughing our asses off. We both knew it had to be the one for my older daughter because of the stink she made over not getting a ring tone.
So, I guess you could say I’m looking for free mp3s or pre-made ring tones; that don’t come from questionable sites. It doesn’t have to be music ring tones either (actually I think I’d prefer it not be music).
Even more fun: I’ve got a “music processor” program (Mozart Virtuoso – a bit expensive, but there are other programs that are a lot cheaper) and so I can write my own music and put it on my phone as a ring tone.
Does iphone have “zedge”? It’s a ringtone app that’s free and has just tons of stuff
I know I have it for my Droid, but I can’t imagine it’s ONLY for Droid
It doesn’t appear to work for iTunes and windows.
Ringtone Designer is a free iphone app that will let you take song clips and convert them to ringtones. It pretty much automates the process outlined by cochrane in post #3. It’s still a little tedious getting the ringtone from the app to your ringtone library.
Wow, I freaked out when I saw this was a thread I started because I didn’t remember starting it! Now I see it’s a zombie thread raised from the dead by Trinopus. And with my posting of this I might set a record for actually being a thread killer twice on the same thread!
I’ve used a sound editing program, Cool Edit, for over a decade to sample and make my own wav files for Windows (Cool Edit was eventually bought by Adobe and is now called Audition). So when I got my first feature phone that could play custom ringtones I made many very appropriate ones for different people!
When I got an iPhone instead of an Android (long story) I brought it into the AT&T store to ask a few simple questions. Lastly I asked, “Oh by the way, how do you load custom ringtones on it?” and the Apple flunky just happily replied, “Oh you can’t, you just buy them from iTunes”. I literally almost said, "Ahhh, then can I return this thing!"** but I figured there had to be a way to do it. Fortunately I found that Apple’s ringtone format wasn’t that proprietary or encrypted (not sure if it originally was) so there were some free PC apps that converted wavs into ringtones…
Actually, it got raised by a spammer.
