I like oranges, but I don’t like the orange juice in the cartons very much. I’m looking for an alternative with a similar price and nutritional value. Fresh fruit is more expensive, and often doesn’t last very long. I don’t have the time to walk the mile to the nearest supermarket, and the closest alternatives tend to gouge in comparison ($2.69 versus $1.29 for a half gallon of milk, for example; it’s insane). I’d also like to avoid as much corn syrup as possible.
Anyone else find themselves in my situation? What are my alternatives?
Have you tried OJ from concentrate? I’m not big OJ fan, so I don’t really know what it’s like, but maybe you’d like that more. I imagine it would be in the right price range. IIRC, fruit juice concentrate has also branched out into a wide variety of other flavors.
I’m addicted to Nantucet Nectar’s Organic Banana Mango Carrot juice, but it’s really overpriced, so it probably isn’t the sort of thing that you’re looking for to drink on a regular basis. If you feel like splurging though, it’s damn good.
Not 100% clear on what your looking for but you need to find a store (most likely family operated) that sqeezes their own OJ. For Example at my store, we squeeze the oranges right into a containter that gets capped and goes on the shelf. Nothing add…ever…period. Is that sorta what your looking for?
Otherwise you gotta wacth the labeling on the bottles. Look for things that say Fruit Juice NOT Fruit Drink or Fruit Flavored something or other. Those all have additives, but Fruit Juice has a much higher amount of actually juice in it. Sorry don’t remember percentages right now.
I live in a studio apartment, so my kitchen is dwarfed by many walk-in closets. My space and culinary equipment are limited, and I’m not too keen on investing in too much on any specialized processors or juicers or anything like that. What would be the poor man’s way of squeezing these things? Just an old-fashioned juicer?
You know, if you are going for health, juice isn’t especially nutricious and is pretty heavy on the calories. It’s not really an alternative to fresh fruit. It’s not even really much better than soda- sure, it has vitamins, but few Americans are lacking in vitamins.
I’ve been making smoothies with frozen fruit- good stuff.
