Looking for: "Man in the ??? Mode" story from ages ago

Back in the mid to late '70’s, there was a series of smallish books that contained short stories and examples of certain works. They had titles like “Man in the expository mode”, “Man in the poetic mode” and so forth. In one of these books, I can remember a short story, written in first person I think, about a guy that helps a blind man use a restroom in a public diner… or was it a bus depot? I can recall enough that I know I’d like to re-read it, but not enough to make a google search work unaided. Does anyone else remember this story? Author? Title?
