Looking for opinions and information on Movie Pass

Maybe they’ve put a bunch of money into a Robert De Niro flick and are about to release it after first making sure that he’s on everyone’s mind (and Trump and Russian mob money are somehow involved).

In case anyone is wondering, no I don’t believe that, and yes it is a joke.

After several days in a row in which there was effectively nothing for me to watch, I cancelled.

Movie Pass was a great deal since I joined in November of last year. That is until say August when things went downhill fast, at this point it’s not worth it for people to join. For those of us who are already members, the three movies a month free is a good deal. After that you will be able to watch a movie after 2-5 bucks discount. The good news is that there is no price hike(for now), it’s still $9.99.

The bad news is that most days when you click on a theater in Your vicinity, you’ll see a notice saying that there is no screenings at that theater that day. Which is not true. Or it will show only one screening, or a screening that is in 3D, which defeats the purpose as you can’t use it since the app does not support 3D movies.

Before when you clicked on a theater, it showed all movies showing that day, now it it will show one or two. Because of Movie Pass I also watched foreign, obscure or sometimes old movies that were released decades ago at theaters in Laemmle. Now most days on the app, Laemmle is empty. So I have to visit their site to see what movies are showing.

Movie Pass is frustrating now but you can still watch three films a month by just paying 10 bucks.

A trifling difference, but just to mention, we pay $9.95. I told myself if we go two calendar months in a row without being able to use it, then we’ll cancel. But we’ve still lost a little these past two months, as we used it once each month, and with the Senior discount at the theater we went to, the tickets would have been $8.25. Still, close enough considering how much it did save us early on.

As far as I can tell they’re obligated to keep it running because of all the subscriptions they sold to Costco members. I have not been converted to a three movie a month plan, if I look around I can get to a film every single night. Have a couple of theaters I can get to that do e-ticketing, and I can see anything they have listed. The rest of the time I get whatever films they’re currently promoting.

Movie password for my wife and myself today, so it works on occasion for some people. I’m grandfathered in for the unlimited due to my Costco membership, and she’s on the three films a month plan, but they have some films that they have an investment in listed as bonus films and that’s the one she used tonight.

MoviePass just sent me a replacement debit card, explaining that they have a different credit card processor.

You think?

Went to see What They Had today, showing at only one theater. I checked two days ago, and MP was allowing it. Today, no. Grrr.

This morning, I logged into Movie Pass and saw the one movie available with it in all of Honolulu was Can You Ever Forgive Me? It’s showing at only one (1) theater here. But that’s okay, because it’s not far from Waikiki, and this was the film we really wanted to see. So off we go, we get to the theater … and suddenly Movie Pass has a problem. Neither the wife nor I could log in. We both kept getting an error message that said to try again later. We kept trying for an hour, but no go. So we just went ahead and paid for our tickets.

Movie Pass previously saved us a lot of money, so we’re trying to be patient. But I think it won’t be much longer until we cancel our accounts.

Did any of you who have a MoviePass account get an apology email from their “Director of Barketing” this past week? This sounds truly strange.

Yes. And MP has been receiving a lot of flak for its flippancy.

Saturday morning, I checked Movie Pass. Mostly they were pushing that crappy new Girl with the Dragon Tattoo film, horrible by all accounts, in a few theaters and no other film. Except in one (1) Honolulu movie theater, A Private War is showing, and Movie Pass was covering it. Great! Wanted to see that. But the theater is far away, on the way to the airport, so before leaving I checked MP again. Suddenly it was gone. Taken down, along with the crappy film at every theater. Grrr.

November has come and gone without us being able to use Movie Pass once. If December is the same, I’m cancelling our accounts.

On the off days now when it does allow a movie, it’s almost always a crappy offering, occasionally a fair one.

You are apparently very patient, I think the rest of us bailed around August when they started restricting showings in the extreme.

I’m just grateful for the amount of money they saved us back when they were still good. As long as we’ve been able to see one film a month on MP, then I’ve been up for keeping it. But if two months in a row go by, I’m tossing it.

Well I got an e-mail from moviepass advertising a dog-walking company. (It’s totally relevant to moviepass, you see - you could go see a movie while getting you dog walked!)

So we’ve reached a new level of desperation.

The New York Times says that MoviePass is introducing a three-tier subscription plan. What do you think?

$15 for 3 movies is still a good deal especially in areas with high movie prices, but I doubt their sincerity at the “any movie, any time” - you’re supposed to see any movie on their curated list now, but people still run into the “no showtimes available” issue regularly. I predict that even the new, more expensive moviepass won’t work right.

Sinemia, a moviepass competitor, is getting better apparently. They have a $9 a month 3 movie plan. Their downside is that you have to pay $20 upfront if you sign up month to month (I think that’s waived for annual) and that you used to have to order online and pay fandango’s convenience fee ($2 per movie? something like that). But I read that they’re issuing debit cards again and so you can order at the movie theater for free just like moviepass. Although I haven’t looked into that to confirm it.

I’ll dig around more about sinemia and see what I can find.

Alright, so already a big catch. You can’t pay by credit card anymore, you have to give them your banking information. Nope. I assume it’s because credit card companies won’t work with them due to chargebacks but they are not a company I’d trust directly to take shit from my bank account.

The best prices are only available if you buy two subscriptions, although to be fair there’s still a decent discount for the solo annual subscription puts it at $10/mo. But I think it’d be foolish to prepay for an annual subscription to moviepass unless you’re confident you can get your money back via chargeback when they fold.

It’s not enough for me to come back to the sketchy ass company but I’ll keep an eye on it to see if they’re actually delivering what they promise. I doubt it.

From the new TOS:

They can charge you more if you… see too many movies… on a plan that’s locked to 3 a month?

The whole thing still feels pretty sketchy, and the emphasis on annual subscriptions makes me think they’re trying to get one last big cash out before folding. The banking info instead of CC so you can’t do chargebacks when that happens.
