Looking for opinions and information on Movie Pass

Yeah, we got that too.

That’s not so here, at least not yet. In fact, I forgot to update my credit-card info on their site after I got a new card when the old one expired. So yesterday we got an e-mail from MP saying the card info wasn’t good anymore. I logged in, updated the info, and the card was charged.

We successfully used MoviePass yesterday but not for our first choice. In the morning it offered Green Book and the Swedish film Border at one theater. We preferred the former, but when we got to the theater it had been removed, leaving only the Swedish film. But we were interested in that one too and so watched it. That sets the timer back for my two-consecutive-months rule of not being able to use MP.

I managed to use it today to see At Eternity’s Edge, starring Willem Dafoe about Vincent van Gogh. When I saw that I jumped on the bus hurry down there, need to sure to check in 30 minutes ahead of time, and was sweating whether or not the money would actually still be on the card by the time I got there.

That has not appeared in Hawaii yet, but there are previews. I hope MP will allow it for us here too. We definitely want to see it.

My MoviePass app was crashing regularly so I contacted them (via Twitter) and they walked through everything with me and figured out the problem and the app is now fixed. This was my only Customer Service interaction with them, but it was a good one.

I’m lucky that I live in the SF Bay Area, where Landmarks all do E-ticketing, which MoviePass can accommodate not with the debit card they provide but with a QR code directly to my cel phone. So while I have no problem redeeming movies regularly (there are a lot of Landmark chains here convenient to me), I haven’t actually used the card in months. But the app works well on my end and for now, continues to be a big money saver, especially since this is when the theaters are glutted with films on award campaigns.

There is another thing that they announced, which is that some movies are labeled as “Bonus” which means that fulfillment of those tickets do not count against your monthly allotment of 3. A quick scan didn’t yield any films that i could see labelled as Bonus, but maybe someone else has seen some…

We saw one listed as a bonus, but not exactly by choice. It was because it was the only film at the time that MP was even offering! It was Colette. It was one on our personal list but not high up. Otherwise, MP’s Bonus movies are usually crap fare.

I’m still getting e-mails from moviepass. This has to be the saddest, most pathetic death of a company I’ve ever seen. They sent me like 4 e-mails about their new 1 year plans. Then today I got an e-mail about 3 month plans. Next month will be like “we’ll give you 3 weeks for $11.72 (for 2 subs, individual subs are $13.41” and guarantee you can see at least 1 movie of our choosing if you show up before 11am!"

I bet they sold like literally a dozen or so annual passes, if that. That was their big funding plan to stay alive.

This is as close to begging as I can remember seeing from an actual real life corporation.

I’m glad I never bought in to MoviePass, but I’m also glad they got AMC to start offering their A-List, which I’m really liking so far.

Moviepass was great for about 8 months to a year there, so it was good to use them while it was good, and not too onerous to simply unsubscribe from their ads when you were done with it. I haven’t done that yet because I’m curious how desperate this thing goes.

Dammit. Every time this is bumped I check to see if this is the end.

:dubious: Colette was never a bonus movie. And “crap fare”? The bonus movies have been:

Monsters and Men (83% on RT)
In Search of Greatness (88% on RT)
Border (97% on RT)

And the one night only screenings of Coldplay: Head Full of Dreams and The King & I.

Colette was listed as a bonus movie on both our apps here in Hawaii. Perhaps different markets? And while not all the movies offered now are crap, the vast majority are.

And the latest Movie Pass offer? 20%off my order of holiday flowers.

I think you must be mistaken. There is not a single mention of Colette ever being a bonus on the MoviePass reddit, and they have info for every single week.

You said “MP’s Bonus movies are usually crap fare.” What vast majority are you even talking about? There have been *three * bonus films plus the 2 one-night-only screenings. The only bonus movie currently even offered is “Border,” one of the top reviewed films of the year. (I saw it, it’s excellent.)

I’m pretty sure I’m not mistaken about Colette but don’t feel it worth pursuing. As for most bonus movies being crap, I actually meant most movies offered period now are crap and somehow made that bonus movie. Whatever.

My MoviePass subscription is coming to an end in January. I thought it ended today. Looking back over the last year, I’ve seen more than 50 films. Given the pass cost $89, that is a hell of a bargain.

Yeah, that’s why I’m still giving them a chance. They did save us a lot of money when they were good. I doubt we’ll see those days again, but we’re still hanging in.

One thing that irks me more than even the limited selections now is the complete day-to-day randomness. Even on days we don’t intend to see a movie, I will often open up the app to check offerings, and it’s so hit and miss. Yesterday The Favourite and Vox Lux, both of which we really want to see, were offered. Today, no movie at any Honolulu theater is offered, nothing, nada. And it even seems to change from hour to hour, as one day we were going to go see a film offered in one theater far away since it was listed on the app, but checking one last time before we left, it had been removed.
