Yep. A friend’s band covered “Use Me,” oh, must have been 10 years ago. They did such a good job with it that I started getting into Withers’s music, and now “Bill Withers Live at Carnegie Hall” is probably my all-time favorite concert album. Just amazing stuff.
Withers is still alive, is he not?
Old Flame sung by Alabama and a few other bands.
chorus:
Steve Goodman, “Yellow Coat”

Junior Brown, “My Wife Thinks You’re Dead”
You Look So Good In Love George Straight
Would The Dance by Garth Brooks qualify? Maybe if you stretch it.
And I think there was some song that mentioned snow…
I’m fairly sure it’s The Last Nail.
(OK, the “chance encounter” is never explicitly mentioned, but from the context, it seems clear. And damn, it’s a much better song than the one that everyone seems to have forgotten the name of.)
Louise by the Human League
Romeo & Juliet Dire Straights.
“Look Away” by Peter Cetera/Chicago might qualify.
There’s also “WOLD” by Harry Chapin.
“What it Takes” by Aerosmith.
*There goes my old girlfriend
Well there’s another diamond ring
And all those late night promises
I guess they don’t mean a thing
So baby, what’s your story
Did you find another man
Is it easy to sleep in the bed that we made
When you don’t look back
I guess the feelings start to fade away
CHORUS
So tell me what it takes to let you go
Tell me how the pain’s supposed to go
Tell me how it is that you can sleep in the night
Without thinking you’ve lost everything that was good
In your life to the toss of the dice *
I thought there was one by Dan something-or-other, too. Doesn’t he play guitar?
Was it falling Christmas eve?
Now that you mention it, yeah…
Another chance encounter song is You Know Me Better Than That also by George Straight.
Main and Broadway, by a cuddlecore punk trio called Cub. If you ever need a song for a bitter breakup, this is the one.
Love letters, broken lockets,
Dead flowers, candy boxes;
That’s what you’re left with when it’s over.
With everybody and his brother (and sister) doing “Great American Songbooks” these days, it’s surprising that I’m the first to mention What’s New?
“Brand New Baby” by Semisonic. Great song, BTW.
What about gasp “All I Wanna Do (Is Make Love To You)” by Heart?
Then it happened one day, we came round the same way
You can imagine his surprise when he saw his own eyes
I said please, please understand
I’m in love with another man
And what he couldn’t give me
Was the one little thing that you can
I’ve never understood this song – it seems to be about a woman with an infertile husband, but it creeps me out that 1) she has such passionate “lovemaking” with the guy she uses as a sperm donor “all night long”, 2) she doesn’t tell him about the kid, and 3) people think this is a romantic song.
Anyway, hijack over, I believe it fits the OP.
