So my cousin was just diagnosed with Ewings disease (a form of bone cancer) in his knee. We’re still waiting for more and more test results, so I can’t divulge any more info. Not sure if he’ll have an amputation or not.
We were trying to think of a good, useful gift for him and since he’s an IT guy by trade and also taking classes online, we thought a laptop would be really great for a guy having knee surgeries and a chemo drip. He’ll be “lucky” enough to get his chemo at home.
Anyway, I don’t have access to cheap laptops. I don’t want to go on eBay to find one. My uncle works at a company that has a “partnership” with Dell that could get him a discount (i’m sure many of you guys to too), but I wanted to check here first.
I was wondering if anyone here, that is trustworthy, has a laptop to SELL me. I am not looking to get a free one fo rmy poor cousin. That’s not cool (I’m a stranger) but I am just looking for a used, discounted, slightly powerful (at least 500mHz, XP ready) laptop to purchase between my other family members and I to send to my cousin.
No hard feelings if I don’t get any replies. Just thought this would be a relatively “safe” place to look for a used laptop, since I don’t trust eBay in this matter and I know alot of you guys work at places that sell off-lease computers for discount and stuff.
Email me at the link in my profile if you have any info. Thanks!
A 500 mhz notebook is just of the edge of iffiness to run XP properly. It will, but it’'ll be a touch pokey even with a good slug of RAM.
If you shop around you can get powerful new, brand name, XP notebooks on sale with a warranty for around 600 - 700 before tax and after rebates. Quite frankly the warranty and more powerful hardware is worth the extra 100-150 or so vs a used unit.
Computer Geeks has some decent deals on older notebooks for around 400 dollars.
If his treatment is all going to be at home, then never mind, but if he’s going to be in the hospital a lot, you might want to check first to see if they’ll let him have a laptop in his room. When I was laid up last year getting my knee sliced and diced, they wouldn’t let me take one in (probably a good thing, too, since my company wanted to lend me one so I could keep working).
Thanks astro, looks good. I sent the info on to my aunt who is going to be making the purchase.
Sublight - he’ll be getting treatment at home. Just heard word his bone scan is negative, tho! So apparently the cancer is just in his knee and not his marrow. hurrah!
