Looking to relace casters in my computer chair

We’re getting a news rug for the den, and I bought one of those plastic carpet protectors to prevent excessive wear of the new rug.

I’d like to get new casters for my computer chair to roll quietlly and smoothly over the BerberMat. Are rubber wheels a bad idea? I don’t know if they wear well.

What do you think is the best answer?

I’d appreciare your inputs.

What I meant by

What do you think is the best answer?

is what was, in your experience, the best answer.

How often do the little gnomes come by to weave updated headlines into the news rug?

What kind of wheels are on the chair now? Odds are good that they’re “universal” hard plastic wheels meant for ultra-low nap commercial carpet. They are often a bit “skiddy” on a hard mat, and you’ll probably want to change them for rubber wheels.

You will probably be completely tired of the chair or the carpet before you manage to put any significant wear on whatever wheels your chair has.

Something else to look into is “deep carpet” wheels that are meant to be used on carpet without a mat. They’re larger all-around so they don’t sink in as much or carve ruts into the rug. I have no direct experience with them, but know they’re offered as an option on high-end chairs such as the Aeron.

Just found this compatability chart for wheels vs floors:

Wonderful answer.

You’re right about the casters’ lack of wear. I’d been using the chair on our Berber rug for a couple of years nand they’re still as good as new. But, now, I’m gonna switch to rubber…

Thanks very much. Chart tells all in a flash!!!

I called the company gotpasswords linked.

The guy was very nice, very patient. He had me cut a pieceof paper,
say, 1/2" by ~2", wrap it wound the stem of the caster and mark it where the pieces of paper came together in order to measure for the stem"s circumference.

Well, I did that and then I got the price per rubber wheel: $10. I have five wheels to replace. Decided to live with the originals.

Mods, please feel free to close this thread.

You might find wheels for a smidge less at the local office supply shop. But probably not much less.

I’ll give them a look. Thanks again.

(We’ve got OfficeMax. Staples, Home Depot andanother damn fine hardware store
that I enjoy going to.)

I did the same thing.
