First their website was attacked and now this. Any bets as to what this is about?
Can’t say I have good feelings about where all of this is heading.

I heard on the radio it’s related to Wikileaks somehow. Seriously.
That’s my assumption.
Presumably Visa, Amazon, and Paypal will be targeted soon as well.
I’ve seen one report attributing the hacking to 4Chan.
That’s also my assumption.
The group calling itself “Anonymous” has been threatening these kinds of attacks. My understanding is that “Anonymous” is connected to 4chan.
CNN is saying that Visa is down.
Yup, “hacktivists” supporting Wikileaks…here’s a story about it…
I find this all very fascinating. I’m torn between being angry and impressed at the hackers.
Yeah, same here, PunditLisa. I know nothing about hacking, but it sounds like whoever is doing this stuff has quite a network of supporters. I wonder if “Cyber-terrorism” will be the buzzword of the next decade…
Somebody had gotten ahold of my debit card (Mastercard) number recently and wired money somewhere through Moneybooker.com (I got a refund from them) and then today I checked my online bank statement and there was a pending charge from the online Apple store (which I’ve never purchased anything from) and also from Valve/Steam, which I have purchased games from before, but not at 12:18pm today while I was very busy at work.
Needless to say, card cancelled, pending charges will be denied, and fuck whomever did that shit to me.
I have only used my debit card through Paypal for a few ebay purchases here and there, and through Steam. Now I don’t know if I can trust either again.
I don’t use Mastercard I usually cadge off my brother. He’s good bloke, but now skint
Debit cards are not afforded the same legal protections as credit cards. No matter what happens and when you discover the loss, the most you can lose from credit card fraud is $50.00. With a fraudulent use of your debit card, there are time limits and loss amounts. Worst care scenario if you are not vigilant is a total loss of funds with the account your debit card is connected.
Debit cards should only be used with transactions where you have complete control and personal access. Any other use is a serious risk. Online transactions should only be done with a credit card.
So far, you’re lucky.
Well, fuck…color me observant and lucky, I guess…damn…
IIRC, Anonymous is 4chan’s baby.
WTF is Wikileaks’ problem, anyway? I’m fine with civil disobedience when it’s called for (such as the glorious riots which followed that Rodney King travesty of justice) or if the target is an organization which clearly deserves to be heckled, like Scientology. But…stealing classified secrets? Hacking credit card services? Why? For what purpose? What do they hope to accomplish? Even Project Mayhem had SOME kind of twisted logic behind it.
…Wikileaks hasn’t stolen any information nor has it hacked any credit card services.
Yip. Anonymous acts like an Internet vigilante force. When they agree on thinking something is bad, they will attack. And they don’t limit their attack to the obvious targets.
It’s actually a bit fascinating to watch them, from a sociological perspective. They can justify pretty horrible behavior pretty easily.
