Loopy theories that are un-loopy enough to be interesting

I was having a fun time reading this article about alleged conspiracy theories involving Denver International Airport, and it occurred to me that I find lurid theories a lot more interesting when they’re not so crazy that they’re completely unbelievable from the start; and bonus points for when they involve reinterpretation of indisputable truths. For example, “such-and-such episode of Oprah proves that Oprah is an al-Qaeda agent because of the way she was blinking in the first half, because of this commercial that ran during it, and based on a statistical analysis of her use of pronouns during the last five minutes”: interesting loopy theory. “Oprah is an al-Qaeda agent because she was briefly married to Osama Bin Laden in the 80s!”: boring and dumb loopy theory.

Catch my drift? Can anyone hook me up with some interesting (optionally crazy) theories along these lines?

P.S.: I’m not a tinfoil hatter. I’m a pretty devoted skeptic. But I do find crazy theories stimulating and intriguing as a sort of creative, analytic fiction.

Years ago there was a guest talking to Art Bell who said that there was a tunnel that started as a cave near San Diego. A sub could go in it and continue all the way to Los Alamos, NM or thereabouts. From there, there was an underground bullet train that could whisk you all the way to Washington, D.C. in two hours. Of course, this was all kept very hush-hush and would be denied by the president and other high officials if asked about it.

I sorta miss Art Bell sometimes.

Art is back now on weekends. His wife passed away last month & he needs to keep occupied now. And George Noory (a poor second compared to Art, I will concede) holds down the farm M-F.

I always thought the Birchite view of the New World Order Conspiracy stayed just sane enough to be worth consideration (Eastern Establishiment/Monopoly Capitalists with no national loyalties bankrolling Fascist & Communist enemies of the West to jostle us into Internationalist Corporate Socialist oligarchy under the cover of Social Democracy.)

The theory that the Chinese discovered America. There are holes in it, but it’s intriguing enough for consideration that at least some of the claims may be true.

My personal loopy theory is that Lamaze classes and other “natural birth” methods are actually the result of a Communist plan to make childbirth more difficult for those in the West. The somewhat plausible part is that Dr. Lamaze did travel to the Soviet Union in 1951, and claims to developed his method from observations there. Whether he was in on it, or merely a KGB dupe I can’t say.

I like the “GM bought and dismantled the light rail system in LA” theory. More or less debunked by the Master, alas.

And does Aurora (secret spy plane) count as a conspiracy theory?

Only if it’s spreading “chemtrails” or uses alien technology.

I am a pretty devoted skeptic as well as an aviation buff. TWA flight 800 always set off my alarm bells. A 747 just blew up by itself with no other real malfunction except some unknown catalyst in the center fuel tank? That is very odd. You would think that 747’s would all be under a huge amount of scrutiny but investigators just suggested some rather token changes and that was that.

Also, I don’t think many people notice but there has been a complete absence of major airliner crashes in the last 5 years in the U.S. The last major one was only two months after 9/11 and occurred in New York City of all places. American Airlines flight 587 crashed killing all 260 on board, 5 on the ground and damaging a neighborhood.

The listed cause of the accident is very strange. It involves wake turbulence from another plane (can be real) setting off an unrecoverable and fatal series or malfunctions. Again, one would think that investigators would require a major look at existing tail designs on planes but they largely have not.

The fact that it occurred in New York only two months after 9/11 indicates to me that some kind of copy-cat terrorism/sabotage was involved and no one really knows what happened.
