Lord of the Rings Mafia

Confirmed.

Got it.

I know who I am, but who are all you zombies?

yo yo. got it.

vote story

woot woot that is out of the fucking way.

now can we kill ed?

should we do the mass claim nonsense now, or wait a wee bit?

ok, i really think we should at least state our names. this always causes great frivolity about whether cannon will be followed or not. plus it gives a real safe place for folks to start talking about shit wihtout really saying a damn thing.

and to be honest, folks. after the last game i am going to push for some interaction. my vote is on story currently but i am going to move it to the last person who actually posts in the game thread.

that’s my philosophy and i am sticking with it.

kthnxbye.

p.s. is story even playing?

Confirmed

No, he helped balance it.

I’m not sure whether this post was meant seriously or not, but while the time for a mass claim will eventually come, that time is probably not now. We can all probably make pretty good guesses about who the power roles are, and it’s not to our advantage for the Scum to know that. In principle, a name claim also has the potential to help Town, as well, possibly to a great degree, but Mahaloth of course already knows that, and has doubtless taken some sort of measures to limit the benefit Town can gain.

Are we going to state our names or just mysteriously link to YouTube?

Confirmed.

ok, chronos we approach this activity markedly differently. and sure it was said tounge in cheek, but …

my goal whether i am scum or town is to stir stuff up.

if i am scum i am looking for someone who maybe has a prejudice because of knowledge that others would not normally have.

if i am town i just want to see what folks do.

i know that you and freud have issues with this approach. and to be totally honest that’s otay.

scum do not want a lot of heated interaction, typically. town power roles want to play it kind of safe.

i take neither of these lines of behavior as sound. i want to stir the damn pot. if i am scum then maybe i get a power role to slip. if i am town then maybe i get a scum to slip.

wifom, my friend, wifom.

Thanks?!

In my typical beginning of the game strategy:

Last section: 7 a’s and 8 t’s. no x’s

Now we’ll wait until the standard role PM is posted publically.

Come to think of it, I do have a topic of discussion to raise: The methods for hunting Scum. Lately, there’s been a fad of saying “Anti-Town is not pro-Scum”, and that the best method for finding Scum is to look for Scum motivation in posts. I, for one, believe that this is not useful advice at all. First of all, anti-Town is exactly pro-Scum, in so far as the Scum’s goal is to make the Town lose. Anything that hurts Town will help Scum. The only situation where this correspondence is not exact is when there’s an anti-Town third party faction, and if there’s one of those, we need to take them out, too, so anti-Town is still the right thing to look for.

Now, of course, what people mean when they say that anti-Town is not pro-Scum is that Townies can and inevitably will say or do things that turn out to be anti-Town. And even a Townie who’s playing abysmally is still an asset to the Town, just by virtue of his existence and alignment. This is true, but the catch is that we don’t know people’s alignments, just their behavior. I can’t say “Well, even though so-and-so is hurting Town, he’s still Town-aligned so I won’t vote for him”, because I don’t know that.

Which brings us to the question of motivation. Looking for Scum motivation isn’t helpful, because any action at all can have Scum motivation. If a person does something that hurts Town, the motivation is simply that Scum want Town to hurt. If a person does something that helps Town, then the motivation is that Scum want to look like Townies so they won’t get lynched. Scum has motivation to act in either pro-Town or anti-Town ways.

By contrast, Townies never have motivation to act anti-Town, only pro-Town. If and when a Townie does act anti-Town, it’s purely by accident. So if we’re going to look at motives, we still find that the proper course of action is to go after folks playing anti-Town.

or publicly

I’m actually catching up on past games by reading Random right now, and I’m still in Day One (the mass name claim). Interesting stuff; looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

here you go.

i think this game may actually be weirder than advertised.
