Los Angeles: Did anyone see those lights?

7 or 8 lights yellow lights hovering in a line over downtown Los Angeles around 7 o’clock at night on Sunday, November 10. They hovered there for about 5 minutes before disappearing. Anybody?

I didn’t see them, but I do know that downtown is under the traffic pattern for LAX. The jets fly downwind to about downtown, then turn their base leg to the south. They tend to use their landing lights, and I’ve often thought they looked like a string of pearls in the night sky – a dozen lights that, depending on the viewing angle, seem motionless. The red and green position lights are generally too dim, from my vantage point, to be seen in the distance, and the landing lights are very bright and draw my attention anyway.

I would also think you saw airplanes lining up for LAX. The lights appeared and disappeared because of cloud cover most likely.

You sure it wasn’t June 2001 when you spotted those lights, elper? y
You seem to have disappeared for a while.:stuck_out_tongue:

I would have to fall into the LAX landing pattern camp. Just to test it, take Manchester all the way out to Playa Del Rey, when you get to Pershing, turn left. Go up the road about a quarter mile or so till you get to Sandpiper (Rd., Ln, Ave?) and turn right (if it is still open that is) go up to the top. You are now at the famous parking spot known as “Thrill Hill” (or used to was, anyway). Here as you look back toward Ingelwood you are right at the end of one of LAX’s primary run ways. As you look out over the airport, past Ingelwood up in the sky you can see, as **Johnny L.A. ** put it “ a string of pearls” that are often stacked up as far back as River Side out in the desert. I have counted as many as 12 “lights” just hanging there. If you stay at Thrill Hill for a time you can also see the Big Birds taking off, they pass by you with a BOOM - just a few hundred feet over head, wave at the passengers as the plane passes by. I know from being on the hill and in a plane looking at the hill during the day, they can see you when you wave!
