Lotion or Cream?

There is a skin lotion emphasizing that it is NOT a cream. OK, I’ll bite…what’s the difference? - Jinx

In my personal experience, creams tend to be thicker and heavier than lotions. Off the top of my head, I’m just thinking of my skin moisturizing lotion vs. the Desitin cream I used on my kids’ diaper rashes.

Yes, creams are usually thicker and greasier than lotions. Lotions are made by emulsifying tiny droplets of oil (and oily ingredients) into an aqueous matrix (water plus something to keep the droplets from coalescing). Creams are the reverse – small droplets of water in an oily matrix. This takes a hell of a lot more oily ingredients than it takes to make a lotion; this and the “oil-on-the-outside” structure enhance the oily feel of the cream.
