LOTR Fans: Seriously, How Do You Do It?

I loved the trilogy. Really.
Read all three books three times, although that was many, many years ago.

But reading some of the threads on this board, I am truly amazed!
There are people who know the geography, they know the food that was eaten, the drinks that were imbibed, the songs that were sung. They not only know the names of every minor character, they can actually spell them! Some people even actually speak the language of the Elfs?!

Geez…I was a teacher for 14 years and I couldn’t get my students to remember what a preposition was!

Seriously:

  1. How many times have you read the trilogy?
  2. How recently have your read the books?
  3. How many times have you seen the films?
  4. How old are you?

1: Probably 8-ish times.

2: Last December.

3: I’ve seen the first one once, and the second one twice.

4: I’m 23.

I’ve mastered conversational Klingon, but am still struggling with the various and sundry Elven dialects. How do we do it? Well, not wasting time on “having a life” sure helps!..Timmy

P.S. - It’s “elves”, not “elfs”

(Sorry, I type fast, and that wasn’t the only typo in my OP.)

Read them three times now. I decided they were on the must do list when I heard that they were making a movie. So, once through before the release of each movie.

Finished three weeks ago.

Seen LOTR twice on the big screen and probably twice more – bought the dvd. TTT twice also. Got the dvd this week, but haven’t had a chance to see it yet. ROTK - looking forward to it.

Thats fandom for you, remember it puts the fan back into fanatic, being obsessed simply comes with it, its the same with avid sports fans that can quote every obscure statistic of their idolized teams/athletes in the last century.

  1. At least a dozen times, mebbe more.
  2. Around December
  3. Far too often, both movies on the big screen and several times on dvd.
  4. 26
  1. Not sure. Probably about 15 or 16 times? maybe more.
  2. Beginning of June
  3. I can’t even begin to guess. Saw FOTR 8 times in the cinema, saw TTT 6 times. I have no idea how many times I’ve watched them on DVD.
  4. I’m 18

What is worse is the enormous LOTR shrine my friends and I created in our common room, our lifesize cardboard Gandalf, our trip to see TTT dressed as the Nazgul, our LOTR drinking games, our entry into a ‘Create a Marshmallow Balrog competition’, our homemade version of the film done with Happy Meal toys…

  1. 7-8 times
  2. About 4-5 years ago
  3. FOTR a good many times, watched it again a fortnight ago. Seen TTT once.
  4. 27

I used to live and breathe the book. I remember the time someone chose Tolkien as their specialised subject on the BBC1’s Mastermind. I got all the questions correct and the contestant did miserably. I have forgotten much of the book now, but I still love it dearly. Eventually I will pack my pots and pans and trudge out of Hobbiton again. I guess I am just waiting till I forget more, so the reading will be better. Remember the fox that noticed Sam and Frodo who were sleeping out in the Shire and he thought that it was " queer " ? For some weird reason I have always wanted to read from his viewpoint the happenings in the year the ring was destroyed.

  1. How many times have you read the trilogy?
    Can’t count that high.
  2. How recently have you read the books?
    Yesterday–well, FotR yesterday.
  3. How many times have you seen the films?
FotR: 3 times theater, several EE DVD.
    TTT: 3 times theater.
  4. How old are you?

I don’t speak elvish (any dialect) altho’ I do speak Mandarin (badly).

Sometimes something just grabs you. Part of the beauty of LotR is that it grabs so many people. Certainly those people who spend their time memorizing the songs or learning Quenya might better spend their time doing something else, but there are lots of worse things they could be doing as well, and maybe they can’t help it.

I remember when the first Damn Yankees album came out I was smitten. I listened to it every darn day. I learned most of the songs, trying to get Ted’s licks on the guitar. I still like it, but don’t listen every day any more–perhaps I’ve grown up.

Peter Jackson mentioned that, while he couldn’t film every detail of the plot, he wanted to get the “feel” of Middle Earth right because he felt that many fans would enjoy that. He was right. My favorite parts of the film are 1) Hobbitton, 2) Moria and 3) Helm’s Deep. Maybe my landscape imagination is insufficient for me to see those places in full 3-D and living color.

Also, Gandalf seems much more real when played by the esteemed Sir Ian than when he plays in my head. Mentally deficient, I suppose.

  1. Over 40 times
  2. Last spring. Since then I re-read Silmarillion and 4 volumes of HOMES
  3. FOTR-5 in theater, 3 on DVDEE, TT-3 in theater, 1 on DVD
  4. 45
Nan lá ëa sére indonyan sinomë tennoio!

QtM, MD

  1. not sure. i have been re-reading them for many years
  2. last winter
  3. saw fotr and ttt once each in the theater. bought the special edition fotr for the added scenes. watched it numerous times as lastely as last week. i am waiting for the extended dvd of ttt before buying it
  4. 50

1). 8 times
2). I read the trilogy about a year ago, but I peruse Tolkie’s poetry on a monthly basis.
3). I got my bootleg VCD of FoTR three days after it premiered in theaters and watched it about 7 or 8 times before it came out on DVD. Now that I own it, I’d say I’ve watched it 4 times. As for Two Towers, I’ve only watched it 3 times.
4). 20

  1. Dozens at least.

  2. read TTT and RoTK about a month ago to get some of the plot details locked down in my mind so I could criticise the TTT dvd when it came out.

  3. FoTR 4 times in theater, DVD a few more, EE twice. TTT once in theater, once on rented tape last Tuesday, I’ll wait for the EE this time praying that PJ will use the extra 45 min to make Faramir, Treebeard, and Theoden’s actions make the tiniest bit of sense.

  4. 33 and not only do I have two kids from a previous marriage, I am in a functioning relationship with a member of the opposite sex at the current time

QtM, are you planning on doing the full day all three movies showing when RoTK comes out? I may have to take a vacation day!

  1. I’ve read FOTR numerous times, TTT & ROTK maybe 4 or 5.
  2. Read the whole thing this past spring.
  3. Each film twice in the theater, LOTR several times on DVD, TTT twice.
  4. 48*

I read the books for the first time when I was 16. When I reread them this spring I had forgotten so much that it was like reading them for the first time. *Lots of things are like that now.

Probably not. I do have things to attend to. But I do plan on seeing FOTR-EE in the theater two weeks before ROTK opens, and TT-EE in the theater one week before. If at all possible.

Of course I’ll see ROTK on opening day. But I believe it merits my full attention after a day of work, not immediately on top of the previous two flicks.

After I’ve absorbed ROTK a few times, I might consider a 3 movie marathon.

ananta úva tárë fárëa, úfárëa!
(but yet it will not be enough, not enough)

Can we hope for The Hobbit in December 2007?

  1. From one end to the other, perhaps ten times. But from time to time I’ll pick it up and read my favorite bits.

  2. Again, cover to cover, about five years ago. But shortly before each of the previous movies came out I read the corresponding book. RotK I’ll probably start in mid-November.

  3. In the theater, four times each, and I rarely see a film twice in the theater. Pirates is the only one from this year that I have (twice). DVD, eight times or so for FotR. TTT I’m waiting patiently for the extended version.

  4. 53

I don’t know if it’s true or not, but a reviewer once said of Louis L’Amour that, though they were works of fiction, the landscapes were true. “If a Louis L’Amour character drinks from a spring, that spring is there, and the water in it is good to drink.” Although entirely in his imagination, Tolkien’s landscapes, and the history within it, ring true, and are as complete as if they were real.

DD

  1. At least 20 times.

  2. I finished my last reading about a week ago; I wanted to go over it again before The Two Towers DVD came out.

  3. I just put the DVD for FOTR in for my 72nd viewing. I’ve seen The Two Towers 9 times so far, and will go on for the 10th right after I’ve finished Fellowship this afternoon.

  4. 39

Probably not. I do have things to attend to. But I do plan on seeing FOTR-EE in the theater two weeks before ROTK opens, and TT-EE in the theater one week before. If at all possible.

Can we hope for The Hobbit in December 2007?

  1. How many times have you read the trilogy? Probably about five times in my lifetime.

  2. How recently have your read the books? Shortly after “Fellowship Of The Ring” came out. Wanted to freshen my memory.

  3. How many times have you seen the films? Seen FOTK about eight or nine times; three in the theatre, and about five since I got the special edition DVD set – wanted to hear all the commentary and so forth.

  4. How old are you? About two in Elf years…

  1. Have read the trilogy more times than I can count
  2. Last read last year
  3. Saw FOTR once in theatres, about 20 times on video. TTT 5 times in theatre, so far once on DVD.
  4. I am 50. sometimes a young 50, sometimes an old 50
