I’ve always found it interesting to contrast Beren and Turín as sort of the extremes of the tragic hero. Beren is the tragic hero who, despite his own destruction and suffering, manages to do what he’s set out to do, and is rewarded for it. Turín, on the other hand, is Hamlet all over. The tragic hero who not only fails to achieve his ultimate goal, but manages to get just about everyone around him killed in the process.
It’s also interesting to contrast Tuor with Turín. They’re cousins, closely related, but they couldn’t be more opposite in their dispositions, choices and departures from the world.
