Am I the only person in the world who thinks the theatrical release was better than the extended edition?
Am I the only person in the world who thought the movies got worse in succession, rather than better?
Just wondering…

(I’m talkin about the Lord of the Rings films, of course…)
I’m with you on them getting worse, but I still thought Return of the King kicked uncommon amounts of ass. Fellowship was far and away my favorite, though.
Can’t agree with you on the theatrical release being better than the special editions. That’s just crazy talk.
RotK was the best in most ways. So you might be in the minority. It has the highest IMDB rating also. It is #3 all time compare to FotR at 13 and TT at 15.
Actually RotK was the only one I really enjoyed. The first 2 were disappointing.

Well, of the three, Two Towers had the best extended version. That movie needed the remaining footage to be as great as it is.
The ROTK EE has the restored footage of Saruman. That alone makes it better.
I love the extended versions. Give me more footage, more!
The first movie is my favorite. Not because I think it’s actually better than the others, just because it’s a happier movie. Things haven’t gotten completely grim yet. Also it has Sean Bean.
I don’t agree with the movies getting worse.
However, I agree that the theatrical versions of RotK and TTT were better. The extended/additional stuff on those two just didn’t…fit, and it was pretty clear why things were cut.
The extended version of Fellowship, however, was better than the theatrical version. The parts cut for the theatrical actually seemed to fit. Unlike the other two extended editions.
IMO, of course. Which is, of course, the only one that’s important!

I’d say Fellowship was the best, followed by Return and then Two Towers. Return gets a big vote because Shelob is the scariest thing i’ve seen in a film. Good God!
Oh, and regarding EE versus theatrical, clearly the best version is the EE Cast Commentary
Fellowship might actually have been the best theatrical cut. Two Towers Extended Edition is the best of the series in my opinion. ROTK NEEDED the extended edition in order to make sense half the time. Althought I liked ROTK… it still was the most flawed and disappointing.
