BTW, I discovered this rabbit hole within the past hour, and signed up for full access to the site. Some of the scariest-looking images turn out to be surprisingly harmless things, like a female fetus that appeared to have a penis growing out of its sacrum (it was a benign fatty tumor) and another image that looked like conjoined twins but was actually a mirror-image ultrasound artifact.
And here’s a bio/obituary for the website’s founder. Dr. Philippe Jeanty was a pioneer of OB/GYN imaging.
I know I’ve mentioned it on this board before, but when I was a kid a friend’s mother went through a really nasty divorce. This was pre-HIPAA; somehow, the soon-to-be-ex-husband got ahold of this poor lady’s medical records, and made it known what an awful person she was because she had gone in for an abortion! I think the OB-GYN ended up going to court – or at least before a judge – to explain that this “abortion” was what the common language would refer to as a miscarriage.
More like miscarried.
Are there asshole Americans? I think I can call the MAGAs “assholes”, so calling out all Christianity for being part of the Evangelical 20%, is like calling out all Americans for being part of the asshole MAGAs. That is called “Tarring with too broad of a brush” i.e the Logical Fallacy " Sweeping Generalization.
Don’t blame all Americans for those asshole 35%, Don’t blame all Christians for those asshole 20%. To do so is also being Bigoted.
Defenses in the nature of “Not all _____” tend to not be very effective in these here parts. They quickly elicit the counter-response “Well if the sensible ones outnumber the loons, why don’t they take them down?”
But going back to the thread theme:
Y’see part of the deal is that the advocates of these laws operate under the premise that they will be able to afford to lawyer up a justification of “medical procedure for a pregancy that is not viable” if they or someone close to them were to need one. Then they are shocked, just shocked that many women are not able to, and that many providers are not confident that this protects them.
I addressed this directly to you above.
Before you accuse me of any logical fallacy, perhaps you should read up on the subject a little more. I will make a few recommendations below – And that will be the end of me contributing to this hijack of the thread!!
As I said above: Not all Christians are [bad/evil/wrong/misguided/etc.] – however all of the people pushing these anti-abortion laws are Evangelical Christians (except their leader Paul Weyrich who is Catholic).
Perhaps start by reading this article written by Sarah Posner published yesterday: (I will recommend her book below)
https://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/christian-right-fbi-raid-trump
And then-
Perhaps the best book on the conflation of the Religious Right and the Republican Party is:
She traces the history of how the movement moved from segregation to abortion because it is easier to sell. She shows how the fore mentioned Paul Weyrich created the modern Republican Party. But mostly she demonstrates how a few powerful organizations shape the entire agenda of the Religious Right and the entire GOP – also how they “use” those same sincere people by appealing to their piety. A very good book on the subject.
This is from the author of the article above.
This book is written by a devout Christian who is a professor at a Christian University. It also covers the history that explains the evolution of the religious right and how it has become the primary force within the Republican Party.
Now please, if you have more to say on the topic start a new thread and invite me to join you there.
Update: Most of the cases I’ve seen are from a hospital in Reunion Island. With HIPAA, I could see why they wouldn’t show American cases.
Yeah, no kidding. Pick a state where its legal and has the cheapest plane ticket.
Several of my liberal-Christian friends and acquaintances have highly recommended the “Jesus and John Wayne” book. I should see if my library has it.
