Love the Muslim, Hate Islam

Most of you have been following the debate initiated by Esprix with regard to the validity of a homosexual’s response to Christians and/or Christianity. But what about Islam? Islam is the fasted growing religion in the world today, and replaced Christianity in many parts of the world
Homosexuality is regarded as criminal in Islam and the Koran requires the death penalty for both people caught in the homosexual act. Perhaps that view is not expressed by liberal muslims, I don’t know. So, is it okay for Esprix to hate Islam? What if he were a Jewish homosexual? I hope you are all seeing my point. Christianity has been attacked as homophobic antisemetic bigots, while a larger more intolerant religion is just being ignored.

Um. Islam is not the majority religion. It doesn’t have much to do with shaping society. I mean not this one. And I would only call it sensible to attack the evils of your own society first.

But Esprix is free to hate Islamic prejudices just as much as Christian ones.

Esprix would have every right to say “love the Moslem, hate Islam” if he in fact hated the major tenets of Islam. Just as he has every right to say “love the Christian, hate Christianity” if he in fact hates the major tenets of Christianity. Which I don’t believe he does. He hates A major tenet of SOME of Christianity. And I’ll bet he hates that same tenet in Islam, too.

The debate is obviously framed in terms of Christianity because ours is, religiously speaking, an overwhelmingly Christian society. So it is not surprising that if Esprix suffered poor treatment at the hands of SOME religious people, those people would be Christians. Unfortunate, yes; surprising, no.

I, for one, never took “love the Christian, hate Christianity” to be a slam against Christianity as opposed to every other religion. The sentiment is as defensible (or indefensible) for all religions equally.
