The former is a description of what went on in slaveholding plantations, I don’t think anyone ever claimed it was advocating the abuse of enslaved women as something that is in any way good or laudable.
The latter, not so much. Lets face it, rock stars are dickwads
This song is my #1 Worst Song Ever, Even Worse Than That Christmas Shoes Song. The music is catchy, the message is pathetic and indefensible.
Having spent at least a little time going over the lyrics, I’m pretty sure that there’s no sense of irony in it. Or, if there is, he is unable to communicate it. The song is Hippy Slacker Glurge, and is as ironic as the forwards you get from that one female coworker (you know, the one who’s got the stuffed animals in her cubicle and who always puts graphical backgrounds or borders on every e-mail she sends) about how some cutesy-wutesy something-or-other did something cute and followed Jesus.
Tomb of the Unknown Love by Kenny Rogers. I don’t even normally like Kenny Rogers, but I feel deeply touched by the melody of this song. Pity it’s about a guy who murders his girlfriend for dumping him. The song describes his “true love cheating”, but earlier it mentions a letter she had sent him, so I think she played fair and wrote him that it was over. He had to drive somewhere to kill her, so it wasn’t even a crime of passion. Premeditated, pure and simple.
I would guess that a dying in a fiery plane crash on the way back to Mexico, and being referred to as just “deportees”, was the actual thing that ground their gears.
“Possession” was actually written from letters from a guy who was stalking Sarah McLachlan. He then sued her over it, and lost. So…yeah, it’s a creepy song, but one of my favorites.
That was written by Woody Guthrie, and it was written after he read a newspaper story which referred to the Mexican victims only as “deportees,” without giving their names. Guthrie gave them names.
Wow, I’m kept away from my computer for a while, so when I come back to comment on something that was being talked about, it’s already several posts away. But I’ll comment anyway.
For the song “More Than Words”, I saw an interview with Gary Cherone, I think it was on VH1’s Bands Reunited that ran a couple of years ago, anyway, he said it was one of the most misunderstood songs and that the message wasn’t “If you love me than prove it by sleeping with me.” like a lot of people think it is. Unfortunately my Google-fu is week, and I can’t find a link to post.
It’s also funny that people mention John Mayer nobody’s brought up “Daughters”, because when I’ve heard people mention that song, all I hear about is how wrong it is.
I’m not mentioning it myself because, with the sole exception of “Bigger Than my Body”, I’ve never liked any song I’ve heard from him.
Agreed. The music is rather catchy, and reminiscent of a lazy summer afternoon, if you don’t pay attention to the lyrics, which are basically about a sleazy guy trying to pick up a married woman:
All I think about when I hear this song now is sitting around the bar at Joe’s Crab Shack while some yuppie loser keeps buying me umbrella drinks in the hopes of getting some action in the parking lot.
I used to love a song by Enya called The Longships. Then I found out that the lyrics were about Ireland being conquered by Vikings, and the subsequent enslavement of the Irish.
And then committed suicide. The fan in question, Uwe Vandrei, used to lurk on the Sarah McLachlan fan mailing list, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, which I was a part of for a few years. I don’t remember him posting except when he thought he had to defend himself from all the shit he was getting from other posters when the word about the lawsuit came out. I have to admit I felt a bit sorry for him, but stalking is stalking, and it’s bad mojo to make someone whose music you love feel creeped out. I wish he hadn’t killed himself, but better himself than Sarah or anyone else, if things were heading in that direction.
Actually, Mr. Sumner wasn’t a sub at the time. He was a full-time English teacher at a girl’s conservatory! I’ve heard from a reliable source that events basically happened as described in the song.
Well yeah, he was mean, but he’s changing his scene and he’s doing the best that he can!
It’s a brilliant tune, lyrics in French so I can’t really understand them (translations tend to transliterate, which loses the idiom), but with a title like “moi… lolita”, and being sung by a (then) 15 y/old it’s never going to be particularly wholesome.
More Than Words is one of my favs and I never got a bad impression from it. Wow, needless to say I was shocked seeing the posts of how others had interpreted it.
The song I love but hate is one I cannot think of the title or singer… just that it talks about sneaking out the back door and how it’s ok to be having an affair because that’s all he’s good for (?) Catchy tune, really bad message.
You do Lennon a grave disservice.
He’s writing about a modern well-equipped society (e.g. National Health Service) where people share.
Like Christians or Kibbutzes.
He also sings:
“Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace”
