Any of us who came of age during the 70s probably recall Arthur Prysock singing “Here’s To Good Friends” that was eventually rewritten for the Lowenbrau Beer commercials. Question: Where can I purchase Lowenbrau beer in the Midwestern states?
I don’t know. I don’t drink beer, but I certainly remember the Lowenbrau jingle. …So tonight, toniiiiiiiiight, thanks for the ear wig.
I’m pretty sure you can find it just about anywhere.
My question is: Is this stuff imported from Germany, or brewed here by Miller?
Actually I can’t find it anywhere; that’s the reason for my post.
I saw some for sale about three years ago in a liquor store, which was the first time I’d seen any in ages and I haven’t noticed it since. It was a German export, unlike the old American-made Lowenbrau I fondly remember drinking in my childhood.
As near as I can tell, you can’t. They don’t make American Lowenbrau anymore.
Me too. My parents were so proud when I learned to drink from the bottle, and they didn’t have to pour it in my sippy-cup.
Speaking of the “Brau,” does Meister Brau still exist? Or did it just become Miller Lite? I swear I drank it on a camping trip back in the mid- to late-90s.
The American Lowenbrau back in the day was brewed in the US under license to Miller. They stopped American production a while ago. The original Lowenbrau is still brewed in Munich as it has been since 1383. You can find it in most well stocked liquor stores. The kind that would also stock beers like Spaten and Hacker-Pschorr. The parent company of Lowenbrau is now owned by Anheuser-Busch.
I regularly frequent a place called the Löwenbräu, that specialises in German beers, but sadly they can’t serve Löwenbräu however much they want to for the reason that it used to be brewed under license from Germany by one company and the other year Carlsberg managed to buy the license and they only fill it on cans, not kegs or bottles. I have asked if it’s not possible to import it from Germany but apparently Carlsberg doesn’t allow it.
Here’s to good Freunde
Tonight is kinda Spätzle
Yeah, it doesn’t really work.
Yep, that’s the German one, and the picture is of their hefeweizen. Also, as a side note, the pronunciation in German might be unrecognizable to an English speaker. It’s something like “looven-broy,” or, more precisely, /ˈløːvənbʁɔʏ/. Oh, how nice, here’s an audio sample in German.
From the link I gave you can find where the nearest place to get it. Don’t know how accurate it is. There is no American version any more.
Yes, that’s been mentioned several times. I was under the impression the OP was looking for the Lowenbrau of his youth, which no longer exists.
If the OP does decide to try some of the Munich-brewed Lowenbrau, I would recommend getting a single bottle first, instead of a 6-pack, as it doesn’t travel well, and not being one of the more popular German exports, may be long out of date.
I have drank a wee bit of Lowenbrau in Munich and thought it was exceptional, but I ended up leaving a couple of full bottles of the (rather pricey) imported stuff in a hotel room in Denver, preferring to take a couple of PBR tallboys in my bags with me instead…
Now there’s a metaphor for life in general!
What, that you’re going to piss most of it away?
I drank a lot of it in my teens, until I began to develop an appreciation for beer that actually tasted like something. It wasn’t until years later that I realized how similar the name of the beer is to the term ‘low brow’, and how accurately it reflected the quality of the brew.
We used to call it Millerbrau. Overpriced swill. While in Bermuda or somewhere I had the real thing Wow! That was good beer. I also used to drink Suisse Lowenbrau Dark and loved it. I haven’t seen that around here (east coast) in a long time.
