LP gas freezeup at low temps - Normal?

I would search for this as I’m sure that it’s here somewhere but the limit on # of letters prevents searches on “LP” and “gas” so…

We have just got a house last summer w/ LP gas for cooking and hot water. Problem started today, Was cooking w/ 3 burners and also crancked up the hot watter heater to get enough water for the really big tub. The stove got really low flames after a while. I figured I was out of gas. Shut down the stove and turned down the hot water heater. Later I checked the stove and it was fine.

Went to sleep

Woke up to the hot water heater pilot lite being out. Lit it and noticed low pressure (and on stove). Poured hot (well warm) water onto the LP regulator and got normal pressure back.

Outside temp is about 15F in the day and 5F at night

My GQ’s are:
Is this normal?
Is my regulator defective (or perhaps water has gotten in there)?
Are there better regulators that prevent this?
Are there heaters to prevent this?

I don’t know what the problem might be but I doubt if it’s the cold weather. I’ve had LP gas for 15 years and experienced temps down to -40F and never had a problem. I’d call the furnace repairman.
