Luna, the redwood

As you may be aware, someone took a chain saw to Luna, the 500-1000 year-old redwood tree in Northern California which became famous as the two-year perch of environmental activist Butterfly Hill. Sometimes police use psychologists to build a profile of a criminal. Do we have any psychologists out there in Straight Dopeland who may offer us some insight into the character of the perp or perps?

Shaking head sadly. What else is there to say?

…"."…

Just some vindictive meatheaded moron who couldn’t come up with anything better to do than vandalize a timeless monument that would have outlived his puny existence by centuries.

I’m a capitalist yet this incident makes me want to puke. How sympathetic can you feel towards people who can be so wanton? Makes me want to go out and stand in a redwood grove right away.

Man, I heard that on the radio and almost threw up. Why? What’s your point, except to enrage?

Chainsaw guy, you have no agenda except for hate, for tree huggers, Butterfly herself, or someone else. Why damage this tree, possibly destroying it, just to piss people off?

I too am a capitalist at heart, but could admire Butterfly’s fire and her committment. I think this is just awful.

I hope this chainsaw-toting asshole finds an Earth First! spike in the next tree he takes that chainsaw to. Of course, that might kill him, but…

maybe that girl who stayed in the tree did it? First, you’d have to be nuts to stay in a tree for two years. Second she got a lot of publicity. third the person didn’t cut the tree all the way which would show the person wants the tree to live. There’s your profile.

PS: the tree has been patched & patched really well.

First, it is patently absurd to even consider that this woman did this. Second, she is not nuts, just passionate about her cause, and third, they did want to kill the tree, but you can only cut so deep with a chainsaw. They cut as deep as they could and left the side which was on a steep slope and very difficult to work a chainsaw from.
