Looking for a Sci-Fi recommendation where the protagonists live luxuriously. I haven’t seen Elysium, but my guess is I’d like something like that, but where those who are luxuriating are the protagonists. I want to imagine being in surrounds similar to Tom Cruise’s digs in Oblivion or Charlize Theron’s quarters on Prometheus, and I want the story to be from their point of view. The characters can be evil or good, doesn’t matter.
Various of the X-men movies
Iron Man
Most Batman movies
Gattaca
Walter Jon Williams’ Drake Majistral series is set among a future aristocracy most of the time and often involves luxurious surroundings. It’s also hysterically funny.
When Honor Harrington is not aboard a fighting vessel she lives pretty luxuriously, as she is incredibly wealthy. Her son was even artificially incubated.
Thanks so much for the suggestions. I should mention that, although I used movies as examples, I’m looking for novels.
Any number of Brin’s Culture novels. While some of his characters are in pretty nasty places (because that’s where the story is) most of the inhabitants of the Culture live in Utopian conditions.
Edit to add: Check out the opening of Player of Games or a good chunk of Look to Windward as examples.
Liaden universe? The family that the story centers around is effectively the royalty of their species.
You mean Iain Banks’ Culture novels. And you are right, Banks’ Culture is very much what the OP is looking for.
Totally misunderstanding the thread title, I immediately thought of Harry Houdini and fur-lined handcuffs.
Doh! Yes, Banks of course. Don’t know how I made that mistake. :smack:
Asimov’s Spacer novels might be what you want. Earth is overcrowded with privacy non-existent while colonies on the planets live a comparatively luxurious life.
