Since she has no money to pay a settlement, and nothing can be done to erase the stigma that will follow the falsely accused young men around for the rest of their lives, about the only punishment Crystal Mangum will ever face is being known as the lying whore.
I doubt they’ll ever prosecute her, although I think filing false reports is illegal. She’ll go on with her life as if the whole thing never happened. Something that is much, much more difficult for those who are falsely accused.
I’m thinking that the city of Durham may be liable.
The Boston Globe has a long article today looking at what the scandal did to the lives of the coach, his family, and the other players. Worth a read.
I wonder if Nifong would’ve pushed the case so far if he knew that white-on-black rape was so rare?

The families of the accused have accumulated more than 5 million dollars in legal fees so far. Nifong has nowhere near that much. I suspect the civil suit will be for many multiples of that.
Fox News reports all charges to be dropped. Scuttlebutt says as soon as tomorrow.

I cannot even imagine why, at this point, there are still charges against the three former lacrosse players. The real victims in this whole mess are those three, their teammates, their former coach, and their families.
Their victimization at the hands of Crystal Mangum and Mike Nifong continues with every day the charges are pending. I hope they bankrupt the city, and that they get a judgment against Duke itself - for throwing them out of class on the mere accusation of a crime.
It’s really too bad that the most Crystal Mangum, Lying Whore could possibly be charged with is a class 2 misdemeanor, since what she’s done to these young men is worse than any punishment she’ll ever see.
I believe that there is a lot of t-crossing and i-dotting going on. There is still a large bloc of people who believe Mangum, and want to see a trial.
