Sounds like a bad video chip to me. Some of these machines had an extended recall- it might b worth checking Apple’s site to see if your serial number is one of them.
Don’t know if you’ve resolved this, but here is the info on the extended program that beowulff mentioned. I was able to take advantage of it on two machines!
Thank you very much troops. It appears that it may be that. Apple wanted me to supply the purchase date, which I don’t have. There is an authorized store in Merida, Yucatan. I have written them.
Some more details. After a few minutes of the spinning beach ball, I checked the activity monitor. It said Firefox not responding. I did a force quit on Firefox. After 30 minutes of the beach ball, i pushed the round silver button.
I hope it is not serious. I am having severe computer withdrawals.

Huh. All I had to do was give them the serial number number. Regarding Firefox, I was having severe performance problems. On the Mac, I mean. Then one day when I opened Firefox I got a notice on the bottom of the window that said “We noticed Firefox took a long term me to open. Click here for solutions.” I clicked, they recommended I reinstall Firefox, which I did. Much better performance - not just with Firefox but the whole system. So much so, I almost started a thread to find out if this was possible. Anyway, you might want to delete/reinstall Firefox. YMMV of course. And I might be imagining things.

Just got back from the Apple service center. It was the video card. They will replace it for free!

Awesome! It’s amazing how widespread the problem was. The so-called genius at the main store in Toronto said they were getting 5 or so a day!
